Hi all, recently aquired this engine but cannot ID it, it came with G/box and was a perfectly good working engine removed for a refit, then owner passed away and engine got left sitting.

Anyone with useful opinions, info etc would be very welcome to chip in.

I would suggest engine is 3 1/2 Hp @ 3000 rpm model 85 Enfield. Most likely ex MOD Navy due to the data plates. Navy used hundreds of these motors in small craft.

Downside, not the worlds best starter, harsh, noisy. Can I think of any upsides, not at this moment.

You are over revving it at 3,000 rpm.
I have a 85 mark II
It's more like 6.8 BHP @ 1,800 rpm. they will run up to 2,4000 with out any probs. 1,800 being the rpm for the Genny engines.
Built to last a long long time.
If all is in good order it will start OK and run for ever.
They do like a little help when very cold but once run up will kick off first time for the rest of the day.
They make a nice Dump, Dump, Dump at low revs and in an old wood Boat thats what it's all about.:)
One good point lots of warm air if directed into the boat and you will need to make air vents to get it in and down to the engine.
I control the rpm by a mod to adjust the Governor I removed the screw and lock nut and made a piston to push in the govern pot and spring we found it is better able to cope with a varying load on the prop.
Bits come up on ebay Instruction and parts books as well.
It's worth getting a few bit when you find them.
Have a look here:-
One on ebay at the moment suitable for bits.:-http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/marine-diesel-engine-enfield-/120572055229?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_Boat_Engines_EngineParts_SM&hash=item1c12a78ebd

thanks

thank you for your helpful input.

Might keep it as a project as it might be a nice replacement if and when my lister SR2 twin goes pear shaped.
