Installed EmtrakB951 in January and all good - using a Yakker to get the AIS data onto my tablet via wifi using Navionics. However it seems to me that my position shown on Navionics comes from the internal GPS in my tablet, not the internal GPS in the transponder. I was transmitting my position and seeing other boats on the tablet, but if I turn off location (the tablet gps) in the android tablet menu (in order to save tablet battery) I can't see my own boat, yet I can see everyone else transmitting. Weird?

So I have brought the unit home to connect to my PC and use ProAIS2 to see if I have configured correctly for an internal aerial. I will upload a screenshot in the next post to see what I should tick. Meanwhile I have e mailed Emtrak support this question but the forum is possibly more fun!

AIS config.pngMy question is about the box entitled "Output GNSS sentences". I have ticked one now (the GGA one) but all summer none of them were ticked. Nothing I can find from Emtrak has guided me on this bit. And obviously all summer I was able to use my position from the tablet.
Hope this makes sense to someone :)

I send out NMEA data incl AIS from my ONWA plotter ..... it goes into the WiFi and NMEA network on board ..... feeds my Garmin 92sv via cable .... Android tablet and anyone else phone / tablet via WiFi.

The Garmin uses the GPS position from the ONWA in the NMEA ... but the tablet as yours uses the tablets own GPS ... what others use when connected via WiFi on my boat - I can only assume is same.

If the ONWA is switched off - then of course AIS data and NMEA stops ... plexor is not receiving it ... Garmin reverts to its own GPS ... tablets carry on as is .. albeit none showing AIS.

Have I tried to change any of it ... TBH - no as it works and I am happy.

According to one thing I found on the intenet Navionics is using GPRMC for location Navionics with GPS over NMEA0183, which you currently have unticked.

Anyway, I would try ticking all of them for the time being, and definitely the RMC one. It should be possible to point a browser to the nmea to wifi bridge and see a log of each NMEA message being sent and confirm that the plotter is sending all these sentences that you have chosen. If they are appearing and you still don't get a location except from the internal GPS in the tablet then that would suggest the problem is down to what Navionics is doing with what it gets rather than what the plotter is sending. In that case, Emtrak might not be able to do anything, it would be down to Garmin's logic for selecting an external to the tablet GPS source, but hopefully it is much simpler than that and just a case of ticking RMC.

Thanks both. Chris, that definitely sounds like the answer, so I will tick RMC and see what happens. I really don't understand NMEA stuff, "sentences" etc although obviously I am using the tech. But really appreciate your pointers, that link makes a lot of sense - I was halfway there. It was only because my son likes to be permanently charging his usb devices and I was trying to save my tablet battery that I saw the issue.
