Hi,

Long shot maybe, but a bit desperate.....

Dried out on the quay by emsworth slipper club so I could take the bmast down for replacement of vhf. Dropped mast single handed for the first time using newly built winch attachment. Went wrong, close to disaster in fact.

Know what i did wrong but to be honest a bit shaken. Would very much appreciate a hand to get mast back up in a more controlled manner!

Eternal gratitude offered!!

Regards,

Rob

Brilliant. Boat is Arida, a blue kingfisher 20 and I am the stressed looking guy in a blue jumper....

If anyone else is around then please feel free to come too - would be even easier with three.......

Watchers - i will explain later the very silly thing I did!

No worries... been there and done that myself...... :D

Nice to meet you and glad the outcome was favourable! ;)

Likewise. Sorry my "stand down" message did not arrive in time. I owe you one! Thank you also to lustyd for offering your help. Really the forum at its best.

For those who might be wondering, my wife managed to get away early so came down to help and we got it sorted together - me walking the mast up on my shoulder whilst she kept the forestay taught to ensure everything remained central, then putting the forestay bottle screw pin in whilst I held the mast vertical. After my earlier fright, I had wanted to work with someone who had done it before and could take control if necessary, but by the same token I was keen to get it done whilst the boat was aground, in order to avoid the extra variable of the boat yawing from side to side. As it transpired, all was well and we both felt a sense of achievement at the end of it (and now of course we know we can do it).

Also, since I told Fantasie19, I should also tell the rest of you what my original act of stupidity this morning was - for some reason I took out the mast pivot pin before lowering the mast. No idea at all why I did this, as I am absolutely clear why it is a bad idea: guess I must just have got carried away with disconnecting things before lowering the mast. Perhaps my 4 am start was something to do with it...

Anyway, no surprise what happened - the mast went down sideways, came out of the mast base/tabernacle and crashed down onto the quay, narrowly missing a car (mine as it happens) and frightening the life out of me. Only surprise was that there was no damage except for a severed radio co-ax (and I was replacing that anyway anyway).

Long time since I have enjoyed a Chinese takeaway and a cold beer as much as I did this evening.

Thanks again all.

Regards,

Rob
