Emma\'s Round The Horn

Emma Richards sailing Pindar in the Around Alone Race has rounded Cape Horn without mishap so far. She is the only Brit, and the only woman in the race. If she completes it she will be the first woman to do so.

Emma Richards is taking part in a race called Around Alone. If she completes it she will be the first woman to do so. Ellen competed in a completely different event called Vendee Globe, which she became the first Brit to complete.
They are both nice lasses, so don't knock either of them until you have done what they have.

Re: Emma\'s Round The Horn

I didn't get the impression there was any knocking going on.

I thought the point was that they had both gone around alone (lower case) regardless of the race name.

Whatever race it is, I'm sure it's a vast achievement - so good luck to her.

Sir, how ungallant

can one be.

She is certainly wellbeloved of the Olonaise and has been for the 6 years she's lived there.

I find it truly heartwarming that she was ignored by the Brits until it looked as tho' she was about to win something..

Re: Sir, how ungallant

That's a bit unfair, Sir, to say that she was ignored by the Brits. Ellen was Yachtsman of the Year in 1998 for her "exceptional performance in the Route du Rhum", and 4 years earlier was voted to receive the Young Sailor of The Year Award for getting her Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence with "exceptional examination results" at the age of 18.
Both of these awards were the result of polls among the members of the Yachting Journalists Association, most of whom are Brits.

Re: Emma\'s Round The Horn

No one was knocking these brave women. The problem seems to be that Cornishman was trying to set up some non-existant 'first' on ladies rounding Cape Horn. Many have done so. Some with crew, such as Clare Francis and Mrs Skip Novak; others single-handed such as Dame Naomi James, Samantha Brewster, Ellen MacArthur, Isabelle Autissier and a number of other French women.

I think you've misread his post. He didn't claim first woman around the Horn, he said she'd be the first to complete the Around Alone race

Have you been at the malt whisky again or is that just another CD comment. /forums/images/icons/blush.gif
