Does anyone know where to source, or how to service [if possible] the emissions unit that is attached to my D1-30? Advice to date unscrew and relocate in Davy Jones locker. I can’t find part numbers or any info about the unit BUT I have a loss of power engine only achieving 2200 rpm rather than 2800/2900 under full throttle. Any images of the equivalent engine don’t have the unit on them. Thanks

Are you sure the loss of revs is due to a problem with the engine. Your previous 28/2900 is already on the low side - max is 3200 and the further fall could be due to a fouled prop or possibly a blocked exhaust elbow. Not sure what you mean by the emissions unit. Don't recall there being anything exceptional on my D1 30 nor of any issues around such a unit

There is no "emissions unit" on a D1-30 ... I had one one my last boat. There is an MDI ECU but all it does is read the sensors, send data to the rev counter and set off alarms, it's not required to run the engine. It also provides the start/stop relay, glowplug relay, and starting relay. It is connected to the rev counter and the control panel via a bus.

The fuelling etc. is purely mechanical so the source of your problems are either fuel starvation due to faulty injectors/diesel injection pump or as @Tranona says, blocked exhaust elbow. My MD2030 had the same symptoms you describe (it's basically the same engine as the D1-30) and the culprit was a coked up exhaust elbow.

Perhaps you should post a photograph of what you are calling the "emissions unit"

whatever it is you should be able to locate it in the official parts list at Volvo Penta parts and accessories - MarinePartsEurope.com

Thanks VicS and Baggywinkle - the unit has been made integral to the engine - I’ve attached a pic of the label on the engine rather than the whole unit. It is supposed to meet the emissions regs for US EPA and California. Engine may have been destined for a boat intended for the US, and was fitted in 2019 to an older boat… which I subsequently bought. I can not find reference to the unit in any parts lists despite having scoured the Volvo parts lists. I suspect someone out there may have the same unit. I have been reassured that at engine install the unit achieved the required RPM under load.so The unit has a role in the physical management of fuel flow and it seems it was able to achieve this. I think you have a blocked exhaust elbow. I replaced mine with a stainless jobby . Same engine .
Thanks billyfish the engine only has 150 hours on it - but is 5 years old - it had very intermittent use. Are they prone to rusting/clogging this young - or is the low amount of use potentially part of the problem? I have a reasonable amount of exhaust water - but I have only known the boat as it is now, so maybe there should be greater flow.

Only way to find out is have it off, if it's low hours you will soon find out if you can chip it out, my water flow was fine as well, they need a good hard run to keep them clean . Only 4 nuts and 2 hose clips, better sooner than later mine was a b......er to get off but 15 years old.

Thanks, like you say it will help me to eliminate that as part of the issue […or not]. Still trying to work out the emissions lump on the front of the engine as it is supposed to be maintained/changed, but very hard to find any info bar a parts diagram - which is below. It has an oil [?] filler on it and links to the throttle/alternator etc.

I think you are reading into that label something that is not there. If it was an EU engine it would look exactly the same but have a label saying it met the relevant EU standard. The parts diagram you show is exactly the same as a "normal" D1 30 - just the controls for the fuel distribution pump. any difference is likely to be fuel metering, but not sure there is any.

As I suggested earlier revs restriction running under load is almost always due to something adding to the load such as a fouled propeller. However on the engine side the blocked exhaust elbow is common, and often the result of low load running, or fuel restrictions.

I agree, it's just a perkins normally aspirated deisel. Take away all the volvo penta c--p it's a good lump if mine mucks about again I'm stripping all the electrics out and starting from scratch.

Thanks Tranona next steps are for me to take off and check the exhaust elbow and if nothing obvious there to check the prop. There is a filler lid in the components that the label is on - what is that for? The oil filler is on the top of the engine

It is an oil filler cap. Usually more accessible than the one on top of the engine. See your owners manual
