I would like to mount an emergency outboard on the rear plate form of my Karnic 2460 ,8 m long boat powered with an inboard, did some body can help me for the choice in terms of power and mounting?
Many thanks
François

I would say you will need at least 10hp for it to be any use. It should, be long shaft and ideally four stroke so that you can fuel it from the boat's main fuel tank. Assuming your inboard is petrol and not diesel. As for mounting, you are going to have to make something as there doesn't seem to be any way to mount an outboard on the standard bathing platform.

Bonjour Francois, Tout va bien ?

I have considered something similar many years ago, on a single engined boat, for going diving far out on the northsea.
But bought another boat instead.
So I understand your question,

The platform on your Karnic is quite long,
Main force is horizontal, but I think that the fixing of the platform can’t handle the vertical forces of a OB engine,
my platform fixing broke ones during a very rougth seastate, without anything on it.
So you would need to make a strong construction underneath to cope with these forces
Murphy’s law tells us that a engine failure will happen in bad weather condition / big swell 

Moreover you have to cary a canister with petrol in the boat, just for that occasional emergency use,
Your main engine is diesel iirc (VP D3 ?)
So imho, all a lot of hassle.

Are you suffering engine reliability problems,
Or is it just in case that ….?

I know that you go out fishing quite far in the open sea,
is it more than 30nm ?
a solution would be to have long distance communication equipment, (in addition to a Epirb)
Is your VHF not good enough?
How about a portable sat phone (fe from Thuraya) for just this occasional emergency use ?
is coastguard helpfull in Cote D’azur ?
if not, you have helpfull friends in Nice

your other option is a twin engined boat :)
I have a nice twin engine Karnic here, but that one is not for sale atm. ;)

Bien a vous,

Bien a vous,

Hello Barth,
hope every thing is ok ,yes i go often b 20/30 nm from Nice ,the D 3 is still ok with 1300 hours!
You are right i have good friends around and a good VHF but some times we finish at night fishing with some gests.....and when you are more than 20 nm you are in international sea ...so except some refugies ....few boat around, smile!
That's the reason i was thinking of such outboard solution ,i have seen that some people do have done such application, are you sure that the rear plateform is not strong enough? How did you bre

arth, how did you break your rear plateform, because Karnic suggested me this solution?
Many thanks for your help,if you come in SOF please give me a call!

the screws that fix the platform to that vertical support plate on the side were thorn out...
a big wave that hit us during picking up divers...

If Karnic suggests this solution, they are probably assured about the strength of the platform,
but I would first asc them about the fixing of these side plates (quite lightly done) and the general strength of the assembly,
they probably know how to reinforce this fixing, or they know how to do that better than on our 2008 Karnic 2660

This is my emergency outboard mounted on a removable slide on the stern of my 15m sailing yacht.

I'd suggest you did not bother. On a Hardy 24ft boat (7m) I had a few years ago, the previous owner had fitted a 15hp Yamaha / strengthened the rear platform / and spend money on rigging up a remote control unit for the outboard.

The whole thing was a compete and utter waste of time. While 15hp could move the boat well in a calm sea, as soon as I tried it out in the real sea with swell and waves, it was useless. When the boat pitched up & down, the prop came out of the water - it proved impossible to make any headway. You can just see the O/B when the boat is in the slings and a better pic of the o/b mounting bracket

I sold the engine.
