I once saw an emergency alternator belt that was a single length that you could join, incase one broke. I do inspect the belt daily and change when needed, but you never know when you might have to change it at sea.To change mine, I have to remove the hoses to the water pump and whilst this is fine when tied up, I don't fancy trying that whilst the boat is going up and down. But I can't remember where I saw it or who made it.....does any one know???? Many thanks Sam.

We bought ours in a car accessory shop. Have never had to use it but we routinely change belts at the annual winter service and keep the old ones as spares - we have quite a few spares! We do have 2 alternators and Advercs so they do take some load during the season, I'd rather change them too often than have to do it at sea. We do the same with water pump impellors and have a fine collection of these as spares too!

Had a simular set-up once, overcame it by fitting two belts , tieing the first belt back out of the way of any moving parts, then fitting the second as normal.
So if one belt failed you had another ready to fit without removing any piping etc.
Up and running again within minutes,

Think you will find that <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.motortraders.com/xcart/catalog/product_17105_METRO_Emergency_Fan_Belt.html>This</A> is the fan belt that you cut to size.

asap-supplies sell something that's meant to be rather better than the ones that break; haven't tried them, but worth checking.

I think you are talking of Bremmer belting. You can buy it by the metre at your local bearing/transmission suppliers. Check in your local yellow pages.

If you look at any single engine light aircraft with Lycoming engine you will find a spare alternator belt tied back ready for fitment as you have to remove the propeller to fit a new belt. As suggested you should do this on your boat with a replacement belt. Tie it back with soft wire or cord ready for use and replace it another day.
