Put in a new SS tank a year ago and still have an elusive oil leak into the bilges . Suspect the filling line but can't find any definite leak point due to difficulty of access . runs under heads and shower tray .

Logically it's at a joint where I fitted at great relative expese a 1.5 inch brass union. Previous W@nker in bygone years to fit a new tank had cut the 1.5 inch filler pipe local to the tank and fitted a piece of sanitary hose with a plastic union which got distorted . I replaced the plastic union with the brass one from ASAP supplies but it did not seem to cure the problem . However I cant find evidence of drips ??

The original black plastic 1.5 inch filler pipe is as hard as a rock due to years of holding diesel and can only be separated from the deck filler by grinding out

(I wish my equipment was as stiff as this but only to remind me of my youth and hold my towel in the shower )

so my logic goes like this .

1 oil leak is worse when tank and pipe filled to the brim
2 logical source of leak is union
3 pipe is so stiff the jubilee clips need a hell of a lot of tightening to seal at both ends of the union
4 Welds on new SS tank surely could not have cracked due to Stress corrosion in such a short time as to cause a significant dischage into the bilges

So the logical thing to do is to replace the pipe or is it ??

Sods law is that I will replace the pipe with no joints except at the filler and the tank with great effort and much cursing and swearing in a confined space and still get leaks .

No other option !??!!

there is realy no point in replacing anything until you identify the place of the leak.

clean up first then perhaps chalk dust round the various pipes, as the feed to the engine might leak.

just because the tank is new, that doesnt garantee it doesnt leak. after all could be a tank top seam /corner (took delvery of new 7.5t Daf this week, first time the tank was filled, it leaked! no weld round half the filler neck!)
