Anyone got any information on the dimensions of the boats sails?

I have recently bought an E33 and notice that compared with various photos I have seen of these boats sailing, the genoa on my boat is too small. When close hauled, rather than the leech reaching aft of the spreaders it gets pulled onto them. It looks like it's somewhere between the full size and the number 1 jib. I'm therefore losing out in terms of set and area.

Any suggestions of where to look for more information would be welcome.

Thanks

Tom

There's a sailplan with dimensions on the sailboatdata website here but they seem to be showing only the ketch rig version. If that's no use you could ask on the Elizabethan Owners Association site.

I have a pdf of the original E33 brochure from Elizabethan Marine which has diagrams of the layout and also the sail plan but these are not dimensioned. PM me with your email address if you'd like a copy.

Which one did you buy ? I was looking for similar boats and would have loved an E33 but couldn't find one in good enough condition at a price that would have paid for the work required.

Most sail makers will have the dimensions on file, but it is always worth double checking with a tape measure: for years I have sailed with a main that is 9" too short on the foot, only realizing when I bought a new main this year.

Anyway, there is a brochure showing the sail plan on the EOA web site here.
It would appear that the genoa on the sloop is larger than that on the ketch, putting the leach of the ketch onto a sloop looks like it would cross the spreaders as you describe, so that may be what you have.

Thank you for your replies

....much appreciated you guys taking the time. I think the sailmakers may be the only option. I have a copy of the brocure but it doesn't include sail dimensions and nor does the sailboat data information. The Elizabethan Owners Association seems to be defunct. There have been no posts since 2010 and I have twice tried to make contact through the email addresses referenced but have not received a reply.

I bought Arctice Smoke - hull no 3 from Peter Webster. I was particularly pleased to find an original Peter Webster boat given that numbers were by all accounts limited and that they were then built by a number of others after Peter's yard sadly folded. AS is hull number 3 and according to papers that came with the boat she was exhibited at the 1974 Boatshow. She's clearly been owned by serious sailors in the past given the host of sensible (but simple by today's standards) features like the anti slide devices on the galley work tops. Proper lee cloths on all the berths and of course a decent sized chart table all contrbute to the feel of a good sea boat. In recent years she's been sadly neglected and hardly used but thankfully the quality of the original build and early fit out have stood the test of time so whilst I have a long list of remedial jobs they are all fairly superficial. The big expense to date has been replacing all the standing and running rigging which was at least 25 years old (by the way I can recommend Lowestoft Yacht Services for rigging work). I suspect her mainsail is original and whilst rather thin in places it still sets well. She also has her original Bukh 10HP engine which whilst tiny by todays standards will push her along at 5.5 knots in flat and 3.5in a chop. I found her via a private add on one of the numerous boat web sites. She was in Lowestoft but I have just relocated her to Hoo on the Medway. Got scared stiff by a F9 gale warning on the way down on Easter Monday, diverted into Southwold and then by the time I got my crew back had to motor the rest of the way in flat calms except for a spectacular hailstorm when we briefly had a good breeze. For the first time ever got boarded by the Police (off Blacktail) - they must have been practicing for the Olympics!

Anyone else got E33 experience, knowledge etc be glad to hear it (particularly re wind vane self steering which I'm on the look out for)

PS - if anyone knows of anyone looking for a clinker Folkboat that's nearly finished her renovation do let me know. She's gorgeous but I can't afford two boats.

:D

Genoa

Ten years ago Sanders Sails of Lymington, tel 01590 673981, made a new suit of sails for my Liz 33 which set very well. The leech of the genoa should certainly come aft of the spreaders. They can perhaps advise you on the dimensions.

Good luck, you have made a good choice.

Hi Tom,
I know you put this query re your Elizabethan 33 Sail plan last year and I don't know if you have sorted your query or even if you check this site regularly but I only found it yesterday. If you see this message we need to meet.
I bought my Elizabethan 33 in 2000 and had the same problem as you. It just did not LOOK right and I couldn't find a sail plan for it. In the end after a lot of research, Elizabethan Owner's Assoc. totally unhelpful!, and taking advice from a yacht designer I drew my own sail plan and toally re-rigged the boat with new Mast, Boom, 7mm standing rigging and new running rigging. She sails like a dream! and I sailed her out to Greece to the Ionian where she is now based. I have a lot of information regarding the Elizabethan 33, too much to write hear. I don't know if I am allowed to put my email address here for you to contact me but I will give it a go so here it is: pirate_rog@hotmail.com send me an email and we can arrange to meet and I will tell you all I know.
Be quick though as I return to Greece on 31st March and do not return until 31st October. Alternatively come out to Zakynthos for a week and we can go for a sail and you can see how she goes.
Anyway, if I don't hear from you best of luck with your boat. I love mine but am thinking of selling her in the near future to go shares with a friend in a bigger boat.

I note that you moved your boat to Hoo on the Medway and I live in Chatham! so not too far away
