New owner refitting an E23 would very much like the dimensions of an outboard well as taking out old inboard. Also if any owners would be so kind as to let me visit their yacht as mine is a shell and l would appreciate any thoughts on improvements. l am in mid Cornwall, thanks Paul.

Is that any outboard well or did some 'Liz 23's have one, I forget ?

There was a truly immaculate one in our club until very recently, the owner is a helpful type, I could ask him ?

OTOH my outboard well works perfectly, could measure that in all 3 dimensions next time I'm at the boat .

Some people seem scared of outboard wells thinking they trap fumes for the engine to choke on, must be either a fairy story or very different to mine, for this size boat a well is the perfect solution.

Will you please get the measurements from Elizabethan 23 if you can, it would be very helpful. l can not find any boats around where l live. Ideally a diagram /sketch would be great, getting desperate now, thanks Paul.

From memory I didn’t think that the Liz 23 had an outboard well, the long keel would make it difficult, I thought the outboard was on a bracket at the stern.

I looked at one many years ago, lovely looking boat. One chap has taken his all over the shop, he still has stuff in the yachting press. *

However I digress.

There are some snaps, showing the well, here:

A longshaft 3.5 Tohatsu must surely fit (though you won't be water skiing behind it) or a Malta. Boat advertised here claiming a 6hp:

I would not try anything bigger than that.

PS,
* Jim Mottram, the chap's name, must be over 80 now:

Our Liz 23 is afloat at Lewes, East Sussex and you are very welcome to visit although this may be too far for you. However, we have a Tohatsu 6hp sail version in the well. It works extremely well (sorry!) so a smaller outboard should fit easily. The only issue with the well are that (i) you may have to have the hatch open so that the engine can breathe and (ii) when sailing in rough conditions, water slops into the aft locker from the outboard ‘hole’. We have fitted an electric pump to deal with this since otherwise you will be baling every 5 minutes. We did a 45 mile coastal passage yesterday with an offshore F5 wind and smooth sea and the pump was working almost constantly.

Pm me ic you need more info.
Bob

Just shows how ones memory fails, we looked at an Elizabethan back in about 1974 and don’t remember an outboard well, obviously old age is creeping up on me.

From the other thread, some do have wells, some don't, as they have IB engines. Seems that one needs to cut a hole in the hull aft of the rudder and build a box up to the deck, but with a lower forward section reinforced to clamp the OB to..
Would be worth the OP travelling a bit to accept the offers to view thems what have a well..

+1, Boatman666, fill up your car fuel, grab a tape measure and notepad and make sure your camera battery is charged !

The immaculate Liz 23 I knew at my club is A, sold, B, had an inboard.

One thing - by the look of the photo it seems the outboard once in the well is stuck there, one can't lift and stow the engine in a locker ?

This is a shame, as one of the benefits of a well is once in clear water one can raise and stow the engine and fit a fairing plug, giving a drag free installation and no chance of weed or pot lines round the prop.

Still, even mounted for the season as a ' saildrive ' I'd prefer it to an inboard for a 23'.

Wherever you are based, I'd grab Cspirits' kind offer to go all over their Liz at Lewes, it's an interesting place too !
