Elf \'n safety...

I wonder how you'd write a H&S risk assesment for this??!

Re: Elf \'n safety...

At least it is on solid concrete and not good old earth which turns to mud when it rains. I still wouln't want my boat like that though.

Re: Elf \'n safety...

Its already been done.

Hazard - unstable boat, probability 0.99 (High 3)
Consequence - Boat falls over, severe injury/death (High 3)
Mitagation - four composite steel and natural fibre props.

Risk reduced to acceptable levels. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

S'alright if they're filled with concrete- but i doubt it.

Re: Elf \'n safety...

Thats positively posh that is !

The weight is on the keel, mebbe the mast is out,the prop is shiny so its just been polished prior to covering with a plastic bucket until launch time...

I would set up a childs desk under one of the boats water outlets and invite any 'elfin safety type to sit down and write out,1000 times, the following:

" I must not interfere,I need a real job that benefits people,I am going to volunteer to scrub this boats bottom and move the supports when we antifoul all over''

Health and Safety work to prevent accidents in the workplace. I would think that is a benefit to people. So what job do you do that is a benefit to others?

If you find yourself needing to employ a health and safety expert then it's certainly time to find a new recruitment agency. People dumb enough to need baby sitting at work do not deserve to be working with me.

Wot do I do sir ?
I take the mick out of elf and safety, hadn't you guessed ! Why? Cos it has gone far beyond common sense and become a self serving industry and beast that stifles all in its path...
Legislative bindweed..
Never mind what I do,( actually I design and make things that people ask me to make for them, and try to make stuff that will work for as long as they want it. And you ?) Suffice to say that, sadly, I would never dare to employ anyone these days, because there aren't enough hours in the day to cover the various elfin safety scenarios that can manifest themselves in the eyes of a litigeous civil servant or ambulance chaser..
And I am pretty sure that that was not foreseen when the Elfin safety directive was first rolled out,in its ''common sense' stage.

It is impossible to make things foolproof, because fools are so ingenious

Re: Elf \'n safety...

Totally agree with you Blueboatman. You would think common sense would be used, for example, when using step ladders, but a caretaker in a Hampshire school has just won his case against Hampshire County Council because he claimed he was not trained fully on how to use them. I would hate to be the poor sod who has to carry out training from now on knowing that you will get full flak about common sense etc. But thanks to our wonderful ambulance chasing lawyers this is the type of thing we will have to put up with.
BTW I do not work for H & S. I am in the motor trade which attract all of the risk assessments and SSOW for everything I do

Re: Elf \'n safety...

I can see, in principle, how it's there to help us, but I agree it's gone too far now. It's not so much the legislation itself, more how petty and obstructive individuals choose to iterpret it.

I am also reminded of a good "risk assessment" someone might have done for the Titanic:

Hazard: Striking submerged object that breaches hull plates.

Persons at risk: Passengers and crew.

Risk: Drowning.

Action: Fit watertight bulkheads with electric doors. Design ship so that several compartments can be breached without loss of the ship.

Re: Elf \'n safety...

Grim innit ?

I looked at your bio after posting this morning -duh ! You have my highest respect, being professionally at the sharp end of it all.

Just came back from the Nelson Mandela concert where everyone was merrily dancing adroitly over and around the many many discarded bottles, without incident afaik...so there is hope !

Re: Elf \'n safety...

Shouldn't there be black and yellow tape round the drums warning of a hazard that someone might walk into?

Warning notice of low headroom under the keel?

Provision of hard hats?

Warning notice - authorised persons only, visitors report to site office, emergency contact number?
