We are moving our boat to Universal this April and unlimited? 'leccy is included, where we are now it's £15 p.m. plus cost per unit. I can't wait to have a warm boat and a toaster!
1.5 kw connection.... if using max amount of electricity...
= 36 kw per day
= approx. 1000 kw per month
Cost is equivalent to 0.15 pounds per kwh
and this is produced from hyrdo electric dams and cost me twice as much as for my house. But then the moorage for a 37 footer is 1000 pounds a year including the power.
I think after 19 years of living aboard (in UK, Med and Caribbean) we don't really need to pretend.
If we want to play the hardy seadog game we can even boast that our first liveaboard had only oil lamps, a bogey stove, etc, etc.
These days things are a lot more sophisticated and just like most cruising folk we can exist happily enough away from shore power in warmer climes or in the summer in the UK. However, living without mains in Britain in the winter when the nights are long and the solar panels get little input is another thing entirely.
Just object to getting electricity charges which are five times those you would get in a house.
Its a great marina, good sized pontoons, lots of space in the pools, quiet in the evenings, very little wash problem, fantasic showers and toilets, nice friendly bunch in the office who will do anything to help you and now the development is coming to an end it looks like the parking issues have been cured. It is worth noting through that the current can rip through the moorings at some states of tide but with the space its never been a problem.
We looked around to see if we could reduce the costs but for the reasons above will be staying at Universal.
The only thing which we consider lets it down is Cafe Lulworth which Universal doesn't operate - good beer and wine, but some of the staff prefer to sit and talk to their friends instead of cleaning the tables and the food can be inconsistant, perhaps this will change when they move into the new building. However its a great walk alongside the river to eat in either Bursledon or Warsash plus the fact that the local Indian takeaway delivers. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Hope you enjoy Universal as much as we do and will keep an eye open for you.

Different approach in France though. AFAIK many places are owned and operated by the local authority, so they look at the community profit from visitors. A private company needs the marina itself to profit.

Some are local authority owned but many are not. We could get a 13m berth in several of the South Brittany ones that are privately owned for under half what we currently pay for our 'non-profit making' club marina and the group that runs those French ones, in a pricey area too, do it to make money. Even the MDL owned ones are cheap in France by UK South Coast standards.

In Calsis it is all included up to 16Amps If you need more you just have to plug in another lead for another 16Amps.
