I have read before somewhere that (you) are not allowed to profit from Electricity charges, you can charge an admin fee to collect the money but you cant charge more than the electricity companies charge.

Is this true and where can I find it?

My marina charges 12.5p per unit is this about right?

Thanks

It's true, but not the whole story. My marina charges £11 a month for the 'facility' fee and £150 for the connection lead. That means in my first year I pay £280 plus the cost of the electricity. I'd rather pay a premium price for the leccy considering how little we use.

Expecting a charge to arrive in the new year at our marina, so far water and power have been free.

We run an air con 24/7 when in the berth. They are talking maybe AU$10.00 a month, but we will see.

Avagoodweekend......:)

Good point I dont think anyone can charge more per unit, however they can charge what they like for suplying it to your boat, to be fair my last supplier MDL was very reasonable, where I am for now is a different story ive paid more in 6 months than I paid for the last year and have spent more time away from my berth too, I also had to quizz my first bill as I read my meter which is on the pontoon when I arrived, the plugs dont have locks so anyone can plug in when your not around and unless you lock it, which the marina owners told me not to, you end up paying for someone else using your leccy, I was refunded but when I asked how these units were clocked up they said it was when they pressure wash the pontoons, so not on in my opinion you paying for the leccy to wash there pontoons.

electricity charges at marinas

HI,

this past couple of years here in fahan marina in the irish
republic its been 50euro cents per kwh which seems very
dear relative the uk rates I see on here.

You buy a card and insert it.

25euro for 50 kwh

We pay 20p per unit, the initial cost of the metermaid was around £120 and we then only pay for the power we use.

It has gone up slightly over the past few months but nothing to complain about.

In a previous marina we would pay per unit and also a £5 weekly connection, plus the one off cost of the meter, plus a maintenance charge of £100 per year.

Can vat at the new rate be charged for electricity supplied before the new rate came in ie 15% on used up to 31.12.2009 I have just had my bill and its at the 17.5% rate on leecy used in the last 3 months? I am wondering about taking this up with the marina.

The work I have carried out on goods and services up to 31.12.2009 has been charged at 15% so why should the leccy be at 17.5% ??? quibbling I know but its the principal of the matter, why line the revenues pocket!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Leccy should be at the reduced rate of 5%, but 17.5% on the service charges - unless of course HMRC have set a different rule - it's so complicated now, you know food is zero rated , but biscuits not etc, etc

No they can't.

There's VAT guidance note that describes what can & can't be done regarding the VAT rise. Trouble is I binned my copy over Christmas but there's probably somebody else on the forum still has a copy.

Its amazing what they get away with and what we pay for but why?

I have a yard that I store a lot of equipment to do with my business, I pay for the electric I use and no more, my friend has horses and pays to keep them at stables, there are no fees when blacksmith visits and yet I pay wehn my engines are serviced, I pay for the service but have to pay my marina as well.

is it because we can, so they do.

Premier marina charge 7.88 per unit plus 1.92 total is 9.80 per unit.

Ive done some maths and a 200w tube heater uses 4.8 units per day

Some heating element tube heaters do not run 24hrs a day (say 50p), they have an internal thermostat fitted that switches the element on/off when the oil gets hot. I suppose you can install an external frost thermostat to activate the heater only when the external air temp reduces/approaches say 2C? This may save some money. But even at 50p per day to protect such a valuable investment I suppose it is cheap enough.

I suppose we all consume varying amounts of electrical energy, what with winter heaters, summer AC, battery chargers and the like, but I reckon marinas should only charge for electrical energy used at cost. We are already paying for admin staff/attendance with our berthing fee and the cost of maintenance of the electrical distribution is minimal assuming the dockmasters have a rudimentary understanding of how the systems work.

Well done to MDL for providing free electricity within the annual berthing costs at SCM! Having spent nearly 6 months there in 2009, if I had to pay for it by now I would have been.....
