I have the mullion 2 piece suit and it kept me warm one january whilst everyone else was very cold and miserable. Only paid £100 though.
It is also good on land; one can stand still in a blizzard and still feel warm.
One could overheat though, so good base layers I think are in order.
edit: I bought something like this from Maplins years ago; ate AA batteries so I converted it to 12Volt - useful for the first 5 mins or so in the car on a cold morning.

FWIW when I was studying in Vienna I knew someone who swore by wearing two pairs of women's tights under his outdoor pants. He seemed quite comfortable even when the temperature dropped to -21oC. I just took his word for it...
