What’s the method for inserting wires into these electrical connectors? Is a special tool required?I thought it was just a case of pressing the square hole with a screwdriver whilst pushing the wire into the round hole but that doesn’t seem to work. Thank you.

Unless you have just the right size of screwdriver you will need to waggle it about a bit. Or, more accurately, lever the bit in the square hole towards the corresponding wire hole. So, for the large ones (as upside down) in your image, push a flat head screwdriver into the top, right square hole and move the handle down.

My Contract electrician favours these on the industrial automation projects we do.
Other electricians either love or loathe them.
If you have the right small flat bladed screwdriver and insert it gently and feel your way in as it were then lever slightly, it opens the spring loaded gripper in the wire hole.
The advantage is that they then grip the wire with spring pressure which resists loosening with vibration.
If you have the wrong tool or technique, they are the devils work.
