I am having charging problems on my Sealine 305 as my domestics don't seem to be getting the charge the engine batteries are getting...what is this (situated next to the shorepower charger) and could it be the culprit?

Are the engine batteries charged in preference to the domestics?
Then when engine batteries get up to a certain level, it will top up the domestics.

This one has made my night.

I have seen some rebuilds of our split charge relays over the year, but this one is by far the best.

Go to http://www.kddpowercentre.com/page14.html and down load the operating notes, this will tell you how it all works.

With the engines running they each charge there own batteries, the relays come in at 13,6 and 13,7 ( port & star'd ) and both charge the service bank. If a alternator fails, the system will roll-over to charge that bank.

If the original mains charger is still on board, this will charge the service battery to 14,2 volt, then operate the relays and charge up both engine batteries to 14.2 volt, then drop down to 13,6 volt float.

The relays are controlled by the display in the main switch panel, so it can be a relay fault, a data cable fault, or a display panel fault.

It may be best if you give me a phone call and I can go through the test procedure with you.

The good news, we can supply spare parts or do a repair, for all three possible faults.

All the best

Depending on the age of the boat, many were wired with the domestics only ever charging from the shorepower, never from the engines, but if yours has been charging then it's possible the VSR or diode is faulty. Diodes tend to be unreliable and I would suggest fitting a VSR (about £80 I think) for a BEP one.

Not sure exactly what your photo is, it could be the outputs from the alternators going through a remote relay system but can't be sure. The alternator outs should go to the engine starter and then the VSR can be wired inbetween the engine and domestics. If you have 2 engine starting batteries then you require 2 VSRs.

Please note all Sealine from 1984 had all three battery banks charge from the mains via our charging system. It used the engine VSR charge system in reverse.

Also we still supply spare parts for the equipment we made 25 years ago.
