I have just bought a 24 footer with a Yanmar 8hp diesel inboard, bound for Windermere one season then Scotland West Coast. My engine is without an alternator or starter motor. Fitting these looks expensive, but I need some power for depth sounder, fishfinder, nav lights etc. I already have a brand new big 12v battery from a mini digger, my problem will be charging it, which way to go? Solar panel, wind turbine, I can get a new petrol genny for £99 or can I retro fit a car alternator from say a mini to my Yanmar?

The latter is preferable.

if you have a spare pulley an altanator is a good idea. wiring will be easy but you'll have to incorporate a swith into the warning light wiring. to switch the altanator of and on. the mini one should give you 18 amps max, but has the benefit of being cheap, easily got, and you can alter which side of the engine suits you by removing the three long bolts and turning the mounting braket to suit. the later altanators have four bolts so you're dictated to as where to mount them.

good luck.

Have a look at duogen.co.uk May be a tad expensive. However might be of interest to anyone looking for a bit of power without an alternator.
