I think the geared winch handle refrred to is this: www.easywinch.com I've had one for ten years or so and it does exactly what it says on the tin. If you just want to bring in the last few inches easily, then it would be worth a look. At 4:1 it would be slow (but easy!) sheeting all the way home, but that's not what it's designed for. SWMBO even finds it easy to winch me up the mast. As for mods to the boat, all it needs is a point to clip the strop to in order to absorb the torque - mine usually clips to adjacent cleats. With 9 winches aboard, it's much cheaper than a winch upgrade!
