I agree it is useful, but that's not the attitude re. not getting arrested. They are ILLEGAL for a reason! Imagine the damage if you hit a pedestrian or tee-boned a car with one sticking out?!

Yes you would need to have the tow hitch removable. Makers of cars go to a lot of design trouble to minimise damage to pedestrians in designing front of cars. You could be sued for excessive damage to a pedestrian if a hitch hit him.
Re tow hitches it is amazing the number of taxis that have a tow hitch at the back. I asked a taxi man once saying surely the taxi is not used for towing. No it is there to mimise damge in a rear end collision.
Re 240v winches yes far better but I think you will find quite pricey compared to the 12v boat trailer ones, plus battery and charger. (or better a solar panel.)
