Hi,
I am looking for an electric scraper. Bosch no longer make the PS180E Electric Scraper. A few weeks ago there was a post on hull preparation and a poster mentioned a very expensive tool which can be used as a scraper. I cant remember the brand name (I think kitchen fitters use this tool as it can be fitted with a saw blade for flush cutting).

Any ideas on electric scrapers? All the antifouling is coming off this winter.

Thanks,

The expensive tool you're thinking of is a Fein Multimaster. Both Bosch and (strangely enough) Aldi offer knockoffs of it. The Aldi one is reckoned to be just as good as the Bosch; fewer people seem to have an original Fein to compare against. I have an Aldi one and can't fault it. I haven't used it for scraping, but for cutting fibreglass or copper plumbing pipes in confined spaces, and for cutting channels in a plaster & blockwork wall, it's excellent.

Aldi's product range rotates through their shops on a 6-week-or-so cycle, so you need to keep an eye on their website for when things come up. Or pop out to B&Q any time you like and pay four times the price for the Bosch.

prv thanks for the information. It looks like Bosch have replaced the scraper as its included in the more useful multi tool.

The Fein MultiMaster looks the biz. In fact thinking beyond hull scraping I can see a lot of uses for a multi tool on the boat. I have only just noticed these tools.

Thanks,

I have a Bosch scraper and have used it, to successfully strip off anti foul from my 28ft boat but I can't see how the PMF180e could be considered a replacement for it. there are some poor reviews here:http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews192459.html

Poor reviews maybe, but I can tell you it's an incredibly useful tool. The riff segment blade is a great tool for cleaning surfaces - I used it to smooth off 25-year-old epoxy tile cement with excellent results.

The PMF180e can be used with hard and soft scraper blades which may be similar to the PS180 blades. I recently ordered a PS180 online but the company refunded as they did not have it in stock and advised that Bosch no longer supply the electric scraper.

Thanks for the link to the review centre; interesting comments. The Fein unit can be purchased independently of the accessories (as opposed to a custom box and a selection of accessories) which lowers the price considerably. Still, its a very expensive scraper but other uses may make it a worthwhile purchase.

Thanks again.

It IS the biz - a friend has the Bosch but covets the Fein. It's 'trade' rated and offers a greater choice of functions. The down side is it costs more. A lot may depend on how much you use it. Have a look at the Fein Multimaster video available on line.

Aldi or Lidl also occasionally offer an equivalent to the Bosch 180E scraper for about £15.

electric scraper

i have just finished scraping all the paint of my boat using a parkside electric scraper, which is one of lidls tools, and i was well impressed, excellent little tool,i can now hand it back to the person who kindly lent me it.

I just fitted using the Fein. Place a scrape piece of the timber floor up against the door architrave and skirting board and plunge the Multi master in. Works well. Found at the base of each door had been nailed so though the blade would not last and ordered spares. It cut through both nails and wood and original blade still fine! Quality tools!!

Got to replace the timber on various doors where the locks and keeper plates go. I am going to cut a 200 lg piece of timber as a dovetail joint and using the multimaster as a plunge cutter cut out the old door frame lock position.

Good piece of kit! Never tried to use it as a scrapper though.

Ditto. The flexible blade eventually lost one or two or its rivets, but it had a lot of hard work and is still usable (even more flexible now!)

I have the Bosch PMF180e. Not realising that they made scraper blades for it, I took the teeth off an old saw blade with an angle grinder, and used this to strip the barnacles off the hull.

Also, the circular saw blade made short work of stripping old treadmaster.

I have old Treadmaster that will have to be removed eventually, thanks for the advice. As an owner of an old boat and starting a refit I can see that this class of tool will be very useful.
