Electric outboards for tender

So having swore blind that I was done with dinghy's and outboards I found myself missing one this weeken ( thank you James taxi service for getting us to shore) So here we go again.

Has anyone got a lecy outboard as they seem very appealing. If I was buying petrol I would be obsessed with the weight so would just buy a 2.5hp as can't stand humping some massive lump around, only going to buy a 2.5 M approx tender so assume a max 3HP will be fine. Any advice would be welcome.
 
F. does anyone else make a half decent electric outboard with integral battery other than Torqeedo? I know they are good but man are they pricey.
 
Yes I've got a Torqeedo. It's a great thing, one of the key features is that it comes in three parts (battery, motor, handle) so storage is simple (nothing to leak), and getting it onto the tender is very easy.

I'm going to be selling it* so if you're interested pls PM me. It's as new.

The main rival is ePropulsion, similar price though.

* New boat has hydraulic platform so I'll be buying a rib.
 
I have a torquedo 1003 with the older slightly smaller battery.

Good points; Works well. Splits into smaller bits so easily handles. Quiet, clean.

Could be improved; Range (newer, bigger battery would be a big plus). Time to charge, especially on the 12V charger. Does not plane the dingy (is not designed to).

Range anxiety is a thing we have got over. The range is accurate. Going slightly slower helps allot. Your not going to potter all day on a long range adventure without another battery, nut its fine for trips to shore/mooring etc...

I would definitely buy one again.

We have one of theses , about 12 y old , it wont die .Mini Kota riptide
Minn Kota Riptide Transom 45 - 12 V

The White “ rip tides are for marine , not to be confused with the black freshwater at 1/2 there price .

Got a 65 Ah batt was up to 5 hrs , it’s a bit old now and will prob replace with a smaller lighter jobbie .

We have a dog to occasionally run to shore , the light weight , point n press and effective free fuel works for us in a tideless Med .
Also we are nil gas so may as well be nil petrol .

Its pushes a hard bottomed 2.2 tender .Wont plane of course but I get my speed kicks out of the mothership :)
 
Those salt-water Minn Kotas are a lot more money than I thought. The 80lbs thrust size is nearly £1,300.

I saw this, and I want one...£90 on Amazon (without the drill), but who doesn't have a drill?

I have the fresh water version which I use in the sea, had it about 3 years I have never had a problem with it, I think when I purchased it at the SIBs it was about £130 I did um and ahh about it not being salt water one, but I have no regrets with it. I use a 85AH marine battery with it. I am not getting any younger, so it is starting to get heavy I just have to make sure that I m organised when getting it all in my dighy
 
We've had an ePropulsion Sprit 1.0 for two years. We looked at this and the Torqeedo but choose the eProp because of the sound - they're both quiet but the Torqeedo has a whine because it works on a reduction gearbox (I think) small prop spinning fast where as the eProp has a bigger prop which spins slower and doesn't whine. We're on The Yealm and can happily go out for hours and come back with 5hrs range still showing. The eProp has a floating battery which makes getting in/out of the tender a happier occasion. These things are not cheap but since we bought it the two petrol outboards have not come anywhere near the boat.

The great things are no smell of petrol, no worry about the bloody thing not starting (which means that anyone from the kids upwards are happy to go off and use it) and it's light. Definitely would not go back to a petrol outboard.
 
At the moment there is no like for like battery vs petrol. If you want fast cheap unlimited range then you go petrol. Battery is for when you’ve had enough with the smell weight unreliability and when you finally realize that you are not going to go waterskiing anymore. Once you’ve had that mindset change then you can swallow the higher cost as being just another very large boating bill. The tender is just a taxi service to and from the beach, that way you don’t suffer range anxiety. Rig a solar panel or get a generator to keep it topped up.
I have a Torqeedo, and I would never go back to petrol on a diesel boat

Which model Torqueedo do you have and what size tender do you use it on?

I think it’s the 1003 with the larger battery capacity. The new Torqeedo is faster and quieter.
I have an aluminum hulled 2.6(?) rib. It goes about four knots flat out with just me sitting on the back riding high at the bow

Thanks. I intend to buy a Torqueedo but I was wondering if the cheaper model 503 would do for my 2.3m inflatable tender (not a rib).

Yes, Scala is right. The battery is the same physical dimensions but goes further and costs more. But range isn’t always an issue, if you’ve analyzed your dingy use

Mostly going ashore from an anchorage for a walk/meal with the occasional exploration trip up a river. Speed doesn't matter, within reason but range would.

I think the 1003 with the larger battery would do.
