For: essential if fuel lift is beyond spec of mechanical pump;
very helpful should you ever need to jury-rig a fuel-polishing system. (Don't ask how I know.)
Against: wot pvb wrote.
Facet 'Cube' pumps are almost ubiquitous and very reliable. Many of them need a coarse pre-filter, though, and some versions are best fitted close to the tank, which isn't always convenient.

I fitted one and I have found it very useful. My tank is below the engine so it's a push uphill and when changing fuel filters it is a boon.
I made a device to clear the bubbles. I introduced a tee after the final filter and screwed a transparent (perspex) cylinder onto it pointing upwards. The top is sealed with a vent screw. Using this ensures air never reaches the injector pump.

Have thought about this before. Glad it has come up again. Still don't understand how the flow is managed. I guess that a mechanical pump responds to engine revs and pumps accordingly.
I recognise that it will 'over pump' and that a goodly amount of diesel will be returned.
What rate of pump would I use on my 4108 and what do I do with the mechanical pump?
That air venting idea sounds good. Why is it not commonly used?

I suppose diesel installations generally don't allow air to leak into the pipework, and most engines will cope with a very small amount of air, which gets pumped through.
