Considering fitting one to replace Lofrans royal manual on my Sadler built starlight. 20kg delta with 60 m of 8mm chain. Will need to be horizontal type to bolt to shelf arrangement.

What's better - worm drive type or more direct gear type? Any recommendations?

Thanks!

You need 1000w. Lofrans Cayman will do the job. BTW 20kg is on the heavy side for the boat, but the windlass will handle it.

Thanks for this - will investigate the Lofrans - appreciate 20 Kg is heavy but Scotland west coast cruising often needs heavier anchoring kit:D

Apologies if this counts for threat hijack, but is the mounting footprint of the Cayman the same as for the manual Royal?
Perhaps that would be too good to be true.
BTW, I am using a 35 kg Bruce on a boat 36 feet over-deck.

Don't forget the chain weighs 80Kg. I would not scrimp on the anchor winch just to save a few kgs.

The best windless manufactures are Maxwell and Muir.

Mount footprint is an important consideration - the current manual winch only just fits and I suspect I will have to extend the shelf to accommodate an electric winch. However, this might help the chain issue, as a deeper shelf extends a bit more over the depth of the locker, thereby making chain fall less on the shallow sloped bulkhead........

Re thread drift, suspect this has a real potential to develop into another anchor type 'discussion' ...........

Heard a lot of folk recommending maxwell, including Vyv Cox! So will look into this, but never heard of muir........
