On our 1978 Centaur the lower shroud u bolt backing plates are small and glasses in. The starboard one leaked. A previous owner had exposed the nuts and tightened them but without success. I removed the u bolt, cut out the backing plate, tidied and dried the area and fitted a slightly larger backing plate before refitting the original u bolt with silicone sealant. No problems since. I left the (non leaking) port u bolt and original backing plate alone.

Last year in jolly harbour Antigua we were anchored next to a young German guy who was half way through a circumnavigation in his erldery centaur, over a beer aboard we noticed that he had minimal equipment onboard, I asked him what his most useful bit of kit onboard was, at that location it was his 'windscoop' that provided a mini gale down below.
He was single handed and the boat sailed herself across the pond.
I love centaurs.
