EGNOS live, what now

So after 5 years delay, EGNOS is finally live - http://www.esa.int/esaNA/SEM2HGF280G_egnos_0.html

What happens now? Will my ancient (but compatible) Raymarine RL series automatically pick up on it (I have a Raystar 125 SDGPS receiver)?

Do we have to make any changes to the setup or does it just work.
I recently bought a reasonable quality USB GPS for the PC but I cant remember if there are any settings to enable EGNOS
 
125 SD - SD stands for Sattelite differential. Apparently that receiver is compatible with WAAS, EGNOS and MSAS correction signals.

I know you can send config signals to the 125 but I can't find the relative 125 docs on exactly how to do it. The receiver accepts NMEA input sentences PRAYI, PRAYE and PRAYA. Not sure how you do it when in Seatalk mode.

I did find it on the e series multifunction display but not on the actual NMEA command string required.

How you KNOW that its working is another matter completely. If you can read the NMEA then you should be able to pick out the relative bit but I'm not sure older displays will tell you!

Just enable WAAS on any manufacturers GPS (ie system settings). WAAS has been around in the USA for years so most kit supports it. EGNOS is the EU implementation of WAAS (ie augmented corrections measured from ground stations with correction signals broadcast from EU sat).

2m of accuracy is impressive but not really neccessary for marine navigation compared to 6-15m accuracy with WAAS/EGNOS left off. You'll find most harbour entrances in dense fog with 15m accuracy. A far cry from the days before Clinton turned off SA (ie selective authority reducing accuracy on civialian receivers to 100-150m).

Well, actually, I can think of a good use for more accuracy - Anchor Alarm
Its one of the little PC apps that I've been writing - a graphical display of your anchorige. I've written a graphical log that runs alongside the anchorige display to show how HDOP and number of satellites vary with your position. When you are working to tight tollerances of an anchor alarm, this gives an indication of whether its the GPS thats inaccurate or that the boat has actually moved!!!

How many of you have put an anchor alarm on and kept increasing the zone until it works? This little Windows app plots a track where the GPS has plotted.

With the old GPS service, the accuracy is probably good enough but a better EGNOS service might make the whole thing more accurate.
