Or should I say Sterndrives - What's not to like about them ?
Boat lifted out for service yesterday and the sterndrives were a bit grubby . ........but are cleaning up okay . The boat and the drives are 15 years old , just under 600 hours on the engines.

One prop is slightly bent but that's not so unusual - it will be an easy fix.

This is the Egg Whisk Appreciation Society.

We like our vectored thrust, lower fuel bills, shallow water capability, unhindered access to the bathing platform, and lots of weight low down in the boat.

DPH-D drives, as serviced by VolvoPaul of this parish.

Undoubted qualities but offset by maintenance costs and more scope for things to go wrong than shafts. :)

Not starting the perennial shaft v derives debate but I have always found preferred shafts for close quarters manoeuvring. However, despite having a preference for shafts the next boat will be smaller than the last and outdrives are an inevitability so I will be re-acquainting myself with their benefits :)

Almost certainly.
But with reasonably regular maintenance - every couple of years - sterndrives need not be a major problem.

I agree although my experience has been that it can be a bit of a lottery each time they are inspected. I know people who have gone for years with no problems but we went though a phase of having emulsified oil requiring seal replacements each time the were looked at!

Much the same as we have each year.

We have a terrible problem with disgarded fishing line on our stretch of water and pretty much every year we have fishing line through the seals and water in the oil. Can only think of once in the last ten years this has not happened!

Luckily the OH is now very profficient at replacing the seals and servicing the drive :)
