My EE 24 month contract is now overrunning leaving me on the T&C's from Feb 2014. I have no wish to upgrade my phones at present. A SIM only deal would suit nicely.

My current EE deal includes EU roaming for SMS & Calls (not data) both to the UK & other EU destinations & crucially has no time limits. Data doesn't worry me as I use an SFR SIM in France in a Mifi.

So the easy option is to either stay as I am, which means seriously overpaying (SIM only is about half the price) or move to EE SIM only deals.

Problem is EE have changed the Terms to all plans, Pay Monthly & PAYG to include this lovely clause:

These plans are for UK based customers only and your phone must be used in the UK at least once every 30 days to make calls.

This covers all plans I can find. I am sure they will eventually change my T&C's & I don't fancy continuing at the same rate when I am not upgrading the kit. No good for me!

Which draws me towards “3” & their Feel at Home offering. Up to now it has offered up to two months out of the UK before they turn your roaming off but looking at their website today I found this:

In any case, in the event the customer’s plan includes all-you-can-eat data and/or an add-on with additional data, voice or SMS the following limits per month shall apply:

  • Data: 12GB
  • SMS: 5,000
  • Voice 3,000 minutes
· Three reserves the right to suspend the international roaming when in a selected destination if the customer’s use exceeds any of the above limits for two (2) months within a twelve (12) month period. The service will be reinstated once the customer returns to the UK.

· This offer is intended to be used by UK residents travelling abroad, and Three reserves the right to suspend the service in the event the UK allowance is used exclusively abroad for three (3) months within a twelve (12) month period.

This seems to show that as long as you stay within your UK limits you can now have three months away rather than the previous two - much better. They do charge for other EU calls whilst roaming but do allow data which is probably more important. However they used to say "complete" months but now it's just months so the question will be is it a running total for the 3 months per year or just complete months that count?

I checked Vodafone & they have also implemented a 30 day policy where they can stop your roaming.

So it seems if you spend more than 30 days away you can’t have your UK number unless you move to “3”. I am sure this is in response to the new EU rules for 2017 giving the mobile operators the wonderfully undefined “reasonable use” clause.

Anyway, mini rant over, off to France on Sunday lift-out at Cannes on Wednesday to do some proper stuff!
