My plastic mushroom vent on my forehatch has died and is currently held down by yards of duck tape. I think one of the ECS type should do but I have never examined one and just seen photos. I was about to buy one from an e bay shop but wanted to check that my inderstanding was correct that there is a fixed base with an upstand and a mushroom vent fits in the base which opens and closes (want one that seal when under way)and the stainless cover with fixed vents fits over the top and protects the plastic mushroom. His reply was that under the steel cover was a fixed vent. I just want to check how these things work so I can get one to take to the boat next week. There are dozen of these on boats berthed near me but this is hundreds of miles away. A simple query!

The ones I have only have a plastic part that fits on the deck. The stainless part fits over that. There is no opening or closing facility... it is permanently open, but like a dorade it can take a large amount of water and not ship any down the vent, but in serious green water on deck they will let water in the cabin.

Thanks that clarifies it-none of the many e bay sellers make it clear that these vents are not completely waterproof and will not take a wave over it but the ECS website (which is where I should have looked) is quite explicit about this. Many thanks for the link to ECS larger vents that are watertight.

They can take waves over, we have 4 of the standard ones - http://www.ecs-marine-equipment.co....iduct-systems-ventilite-9-inch-item-4203.html - including one on the foredeck hatch. Never had a leak.
