I just read an article on the yacht Eclipse. Isn't there a point where a yacht just gets to big? It seems to me that on a yacht that size you are not really "boating" anymore, no way near the water, not agile and very restricted in places you can go. There are some great threads on here about trips around the islands in the Med. and Croatia that a vessel that size simply could not do, doesn't that defeat the purpose of having a yacht or am I missing something?

I think you're definitely missing something!
Seriously though, if you had his money wouldn't you have one, or two?
I know I would, just like a fabulous stately home, only mobile.

For that purpose Kismet would be plenty big enough and still have the ability to get into some nice places. I guess size matters.

It Is. She has spent a lot of time in Gibraltar this year. He mainly uses Pelorus which is only 377FT. He was in Venice with Pelorus this year whilst Eclipse was moored in Gib.

But you are right. Eclipse can only fit in commercial ports on commercial berths. It is still the largest private yacht in the world though and when she is moored next to Cruise ships in Gib she often looks bigger...... which she is!

I read somewhere he gave Pelorus to his wife as part of a divorce settlement, she then sold the yacht to David Geffen.

And it may be far too big but thats why you have a shed load of tenders to get in the smaller ports...

It may be big and obscene but it kept a lot of people in work during the build and continues to do so with the crew as do most Superyachts. There will always be something bigger in the pipeline.

Why are you saying "sorry"? :) I was replying to Nautorius.

My bad:) I believe he bought Port Vell to transform it into a super yacht marina with 45 slips for yachts over 50 meters and two slips for yachts up to 180 meters. That will leave him with some room to scale up as Eclipse is "only" a mere 164 meters.
