Just did a trawl on EBY site and noticed that the only new boats in stock are under 30ft...i.e no New Fairlines. I know they only ever had a few in the past but is this as a result of Fairline cutting production? They still have a huge amount of stock second hand boats but was just intrigued that they are not advertising any new stock boats going into Excell!

Cheers

They tend to sell the stock boats quite fast - in the last couple of months just from what I've seen (which isn't the full picture and I'm not paying that much attention) they have sold as stock boats a 55, 58 (to me), a phantom50+ a 48 and the T44 written about in MBY this month (the phantom38 trade in one). Also they hold on their site several factory stock boats and stock boats for other dealers, so if you go to the site you'd see approx 10 new stock Fairlines shrinkwrapped and you could just say "I want that one" and they'd prob be able to sell it to you even if it technically was another dealer's. For sure they have 2 Sq58s and a targa (47 I think, or maybe it's a 44), plus several others, which are there (seen em with my own eyes as recently as last weekend), new, but not EBY's

We have bought a new T44 from them. Believe it is shrinkwrapped in Essex and we complete in Southampton later this month, they already have our PX T43 as featured in Jan MBM. In future IMHO new boats will only be to order and therfore an extended delivery date

Mmm, all very reasonable but, if they're holding stock boats for the factory and other dealers (why?) and they're allowed to sell them, why are they not advertising them on their website? Also, they may well have sold a number of their stock boats recently but presumably they have ordered more stock boats for 2009 so why haven't they started advertising those?

Ah, ok, I've walked past the shrinkwrapped t44 many times, as recently as last weekend. Didn't realise was yours!

One other thing. My boat is inside in the big Fairline shed which holds 3 boats. I was expecting them to turf it outside about now, cos they said they needed the shed for incoming new Fairlines and PDI work. Last weekend they said no rush, as the new Fairlines are a couple/few weeks behind on deliv from the factory, hence they are in no rush to turf me out of the shed, which suits me fine cos the weather aint great outside. So there are new sales still happening, of boats that haven't arrived yet at EBY for PDI

I wasn't arguing with orig poster. No doubt sales are indeed slowing and they're sensibly holding less stock. Was just chipping in the factual info I know. Ref the boats they hold that aren't owned by them, I didn't mean they're "allowed" to sell them or are officially appointed as sellers, hence they wouldn't advertise them, esp as they have their own stock to sell in priority. They're just holding them. All I meant was, if you walk up and say "I want it" no doubt they could call whoever owns it and put a deal together.

They'd much rahter sell their own stuff, naturally. When I bought mine they had 3 new ones physically at EBY. One was theirs and the other 2 were other dealers. I preferred the spec of the one owned by EBY (oak not cherry) so I bought that, but I reckon I could have bought one of the others if I'd wanted it

One other slight observation. Before buying I got all the spec sheets from the relevant dealers for the 5 or 6 Sq58 held in dealer stock across Europe (I wanted a stock boat so as not to take a big credit risk with stage payments). My conclusion was EBY have much better skill imho in speccing a boat than the other dealers. Or perhaps their tastes just coincide with mine - what is "nice" is of course entirely personal opinion! The others had interior choices like light blue fabric around the beds, blue avonite tops in the bathrooms, etc, which are ok but not absolutely "the latest thing". The EBY boat had all the latest colours and they'd been brave enough to order oak wood not cherry (light oak is the new black - see Pershing, San Lorenzo, etc), chocolate brown leather in the saloon not the "classic" ivory, and black helm chairs not ivory leather, and a fab new avonite called "dark roast", and so on. The boats owned by the other dealers were much more "classic" choices. Anyway, top marks for EBY in terms of their skill with speccing, imho.

The other thing about the EBY spec was that it had no Raymarine extras, which I liked cos I want to choose my own and not pay for someone else's dud choices

I was going to ask you how you were managing that particular risk given the parlous state of the market. I don't know how a buyer who orders a new build boat at the moment with stage payments over several months can sleep at night

I'm not a fan of the new light oak look myself. Looks OK on your boat but Ferretti have managed to make it look like 1980's MFI on their latest offerings. It's nothing new anyway as light oak was de rigeur on early 1990's Fairlines /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It could well be EBY stock, I don't know. all i mean is they are a holding centre in essex for Fairlines belonging to other dealers. That inevitably gives them "access" to stock they don't pay for, which is quite shrewd

Yup, stage payments must be a worry. I have paid a chunky deposit, 10% ish, balance on handover. So I'm on some risk but it wont break me if they go under (which I don't think they will for one minute - I think the Barke brothers are pretty smart and are handling the recession well). Anyway, as the boat is physical I'd just buy it from the liquidator at same price, as he'd be daft to turn that down on a stock discontinued-model boat. I repeat though, I don't think EBY will be meeting any liquidators; I think they're sound. Thety could even get a bank guarantee for the small money I've paid them but I can't be bothered becuase I see no risk of a default

Yup re oak, It can work or not work, depending on the boat. Also a bit of an acquired taste! The early 1990s fairlines were I think maple not oak, and done in gloss, so quite a different feel from matt oak. Nothing fashionwise is new, it just goes around in cycles!

this seems correct to do....
while larger and more expensive boats seemed to be doing better 3, 4 months ago then smaller ones, the rumour is that many builts or orders having been delayed or cancelled in the last 2 months with sizes around the 50 ft mark apparently doing better then expected

Hmm. I reckon you'd buy it from the liquidator at about 75% of the same price and he'd still be mad to turn you down. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Were that unfortunate situation to arise, of course

Yup, I have walked past it many times. It's right outside the sales office. Looks very smart/good condition, though I haven't inspected it closely. It has very good (contemporary)internal colour choices and feels quite a new boat

That'd be the T38 for sale which James Barke is describing as the deal of the century in Feb MBY, yes?

I guess that'll be because the colour scheme is 'contemporary' /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
