We have a rubber plug for stuffing in the exhaust skin fitting when at sea. Makes sense I guess, as the outlet is actually higher than the burner.

This plug is shot to bits and needs replacing. I've tried the agents, who say they've never heard of it before, a homebrew shop - the have them but demi-john size not wine bottle size, and the local hospital Pathology Dept - they don't use them anymore and the old ones they had were too small.

I've seen them fitted on one or two other vessels so its not a one-off.

Any ideas guys?

Champagne cork. if you can't stretch to the real stuff a bottle of Cava will do.

Perfect fit.

What about one of those bungs used to plug the drain hole of a dinghy?

We use one that came with a screw through the centre. Push it in the hole, tighten the screw and the diameter increases to hold it in place.

Save the bubbly for another day.

your exhaust should have a swan neck which should rise sufficiantly above the exhaust outlet level to stop water reaching the heater anyway. The only danger of using a bung is remembering to remove it when firing up the eber thus avoiding fatal exhaust fume poisoning.

Saw somebody with one of those wooden plugs used for blocking off seacocks jammed in their heater exhaust. As it was on a 'classic' boat with an extremely overhanging transom it must have been a bit of fight to hang over and jam it in.
My thought was actually ' I wonder what happens if they forget or dont know someone put a bung is in the heater exhaust'
