Eberspacher - What a Rubbish Product

I bought an ex-PO van unit from this forum but paid £200 to have it installed. It's worked faultlessly except when we let it run out of diesel but easily sorted and runs like a charm. It uses very little fuel (hence why we forgot and didn't fill up) and it uses very little power once it has started up. The installer at Tollesbury shared some horror stories about installations he had seen and had had to go and fix.

The only problem with mine were correcting the faults caused by incorrect installation - dealer cutting costs on new boat.

Since a Eber specialist serviced it its been great.
 
The one on our current boat is 25years old and works fine; I've installed two, one on each of our previous boats - no problems with either that I know of. Having one makes a huge difference to the comfort of the cabin in poor weather.

Sorry I can't agree.
I've had an Eber for 10+ years, I service it myself and in that time it's never failed to fire up. Cheap to run and reliable to boot!

What's you problem?

Mine is running fine. 8 years old, never serviced, this winter running as our only heating (liveaboard) and without problems. We are using DERV, not red.

I agree about the noise and that they are complicated. But what is the alternative? On a boat of liveaboard size it isn't easy to get the heat right round the entire living space unless you use forced-air or a wet (radiator) system. I can't think of anywhere on my Nauticat where a gravity-fed stove could be installed that would make any sense....there is no alternative to forced-air, and that leaves Eber, Webasto or Mikuni. Are the other two any more reliable?
 
My only experience was a long time ago on a brand new expensive Danish TSDY. The Eber refused to work and the nights were sub-zero (Seville, november) I managed to get it to work, but continuous running required a small screwdriver jammed in one of the relays.
The boat was returned to the factory as among other things the auto.pilot would suddenly lock hard over and one engine was constantly over heating. Turned out it was a recon. Def. a Friday afternoon special.

I have personal experience with two units. Both new and professionally installed, run and maintained rigorously by the book. Both broke down several times a season.


the trouble is that they are so good when they work that you forget how fundamentally crap they are.

When it comes to forum threads, would you expect to see a thread "I'm nice and warm with my Eberspacher" as a title? You will only ever get threads asking advice about concerns or problems.

For information:-- I is very cold in Rome at the moment (0C overnight) and we left our Eber on overnight, and for most of the morning. Will update the YBW community on a six-hourly basis while the Eber is operating perfectly /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Next update 1800hrs.
 
another 'mine is fine' post!

The only problem i've had with mine (a D5LC), was when it failed to start due to the warm air outlet being obstructed.....

i'd call that a good safety feature rather than a problem!

It does warm tne boat through very very quickly, which is pleasant on a cool evening.
