Eberspacher stopped working - help.

Eberspacher has been working absolutely beautifully for the last few weeks [2/3 hours at weekend] - until about 10 minutes into its cycle early this morning. The fan noise seemed to change up a gear and then it died completely.

Both fuses checked out fine, control unit still lit up and buttons function with time display correct. However no noise of pump nor any signs of start procedure whatsoever. Tried the cool air fan mode but still no joy. Inlet and outlets clear. No signs of fuel leaks, nor loose conections.

Anyone any ideas about troubleshooting one of these machines? The user manual supplied with this unit [4 years old] has no information about basic servicing nor guide on how to detect faults.

Hi Tam

Might be "coked up" inside, if its 4 years old and not had a service. They are relatively easy to strip and clean. ebay is the cheapest for spares. Had the same problem last year, I now run it on a separate tank of paraffin (it burns much cleaner). Have never had a problem since.
Try espar.com for a servicing manual.

I was going to say that you may be low on diesel - the take off point would be well above the bottom of the tank, but...

It should still run on cool mode and attempt to start going through a cycle before shutting down.

If the fan cannot be run at all I would suspect a fuse has blown but you seem to have checked that already.
 
As someone else suggested, get a manual. There are error codes which lead you straight to the problem. Other than checking fuel, volts, etc., you don't want to do much without the manual.
 
Not sure which model you have but generally the first thing that happens when you switch on an Eberspacher is that the control unit does a system check. It checks the glow plug, the flame sensor, the temperature sensor and the safety thermal sensor. If any of these fail then the startup process will stop. If all pass then the blower will start slowly and begin to accelerate, the glow plug will then be energised, 15 seconds later (approx) the fuel pump will then start and all being good ignition will take place.
The blower and fuel pump speed will then increase as required and the glow plug will switch off once flame detected.

Easiest thing to check is the glow plug - under a cover on the side of the heater. Easy to unscrew and you'll see the glow plug coil (Should be 1-2ohm. Not open or short circuit). Probably need to replace screen at the same time - (since it's difficult to get out and will get damaged as you do). Replace correct way round (tab helps with this so that you don't block the air vent hole).
Another thing - is the battery power sufficient - need a good supply especially when glow plug is heating.
 
Everytime mine does this, all it needs is a new glow plug, and a new stainer gauze thingy. Once these are put in, it fires back up.

The glow plugs dont last forever, and once the coils crack over time, the heater detects this on running and shuts down.

Worth a try.

If it stops like this I would suggest taking a look at the fuel filter, give it a clean out with a cotton bud and some petrol. Works a treat.

As for coking up, if not smoking, its painless to leave it and try the filter first
 
When ever mine has done this it is due to low battery power..If I'm doubtful about the battery level (maybe 1st thing in the morning??) I fire up the engine, yet some volts circulating.

After that follow the rest of the good advice given here.
