Eberspacher silencer queries

It's that time of year, the eberspacher has been turned on again, and thus the questions follow!

I'd forgotten just how embarrassingly loud our Eber is. As a result, I've ordered a silencer for the exhaust (a "marine" airtight one). However, I also notice silencers for the air intake (for combustion air, I gather). Is one of these worth it?

Our Eber makes a relatively high pitched whine whilst it's running. Pretty sure it's always done this whilst we've had the boat. Is this normal? Or does it need a proper service?

A proper silencer, (the one with welded on exhaust tube) will make a huge difference. The air intake silencer is a bit more involved, a simple 750mm tube will help a great deal but if you intend to fit an actual silencer it will alter the fuel / air ratio due to the restriction which really needs to have the CO2 level in the exhaust gas checked and adjusted as necessary. The high pitched whine may be air motor bearings but if the short intake tube shuts it up, which it often does then that can be discounted.

I've just fitted the proper Eberspacher combustion air intake silencer and it really does make a large difference to the noise level especially the motor 'whine'! It is just a piece of the normal air intake tube with lots of holes punched through it and then wrapped in some form of sound absorbing material and then encased in a larger tube. There is no restriction to the tube just the overall length of it which is has to be above a minimum length anyway.
