Can anyone sort out my Eber dilema please. Sorry for the length of the question (s)

Story so far. My Ebber (a D3) previously ran well. I noticed that the battery gauge always fell by around a volt as it went through the purge, ignite etc. cycle but soon recovered as it should.
Two weeks ago it stopped working (although the lights on the control box come on)and the battery gauge remains unmoving. Nothing from the Ebber at all, nada, zilch.
Took boat to a man with a tester and he tells me that he cannot get a reading from the outlet and consequently it must be a faulty control module (ECU).

Cost for replacing module, service, vat etc, circa £700

A cold chill ran up my spine in more ways than one ;)

So what to do ?

Option A - source a S/H ECU and fit

Option B - Start saving £700

Option C - As the D3 is 15 years old is it time to upgrade with a D4. Would this be much of a job for someone with limited DIY skills ?

Smal point but the wiring diagram mentions a low amp fuse on the inward side (possibly 5A) - blessed if I can find it and clutching a the straw that it might be this that has gone - where should I be looking ? There are not that many wires and even I can recognise a fuse holder when I see it.

Sounds like the same fault as my D2, the fuse for mine is located next to my battery bank, we have a 20amp and 5amp fuse in small holder.

Cheers

Stu

The only thing that has ever failed on my Eber was the ecu. The new one cost about £350 and it was VERY easy to fit. I got the Eber off the boat and the cover unclips and then it was about two screws and put the plugs in the right places. The plugs and wiring on mine were all unique so that you couldn't get the wrong plugs in the wrong sockets.

For £700 you might find a second hand more modern Eber in working order?

I have a D3. The ecu is an external ecu and it has a fuse on the face where the plugs connect, have you checked that ? I bought a spare ecu on ebay for a d3 but it does not fit the model I have. There is a stick on label with the numbers 25 1688 50 00 07 23/95 and printed onto the case 5HB 005 494-06. If this matches your unit pm me your address and can send it to you to help your diagnosis.

Dont spend more than £100 on your D3 its too old. Just possible to repair the ECU once you are certain it IS the ECU. Look inside!! ( sprise the ally cover off) I have found 2 where the trace on the board itself was corroded through and quite repairable with abit of solder or wire.
You may get a D3LC Compact if you put a search on ebay or ( for a bit more) a D4.

Looking at the identity plate I see it is a "D3LC". beneath this is written "compact".
Sorry not to mention this before - Just located the piece of paper I wrote it down on. :o
