Hello,
Curious if anyone can help please, I have a new Airtronic D5 which I bought from an Army surplus warehouse my old D2 had blown up. I would like to install it at 45 deg along its own long axis with the glow plug pointing upwards. The manual says it can be installed at 90 deg to its horizontal axis (ie the exhaust pointing sideways) but it doesn't say "up to 90 deg". I would have thought ok but wondered if anyone knew ?
Thanks Colin.

The manual says that it can be turned by max 90 degrees, and the accompanying diagram refers to "permissible swivel ranges", so it's OK to mount it as you intend.

Webasto and Eberspacher both allow that kind of mount angle, I even did my own that way a long time ago as it was easiest but in my not inconsiderable experience with my own and customers units and talking to other techs on factory courses, though they work OK at first, do not fare well long term when so installed (premature coking etc, I would never do it again, even to the extent of turning away business if requested to do it that way. Maybe they work OK in trucks with constant use hence the OK from the manuals.

That's interesting, because the Eberspacher Marine Installation Manual says the Airtronic must be installed vertically (ie exhaust pointing straight down). This manual was published in 2006; the D5 manual which says tilting is permissible was published in 2008. Did Eberspacher change their minds?

Maybe they have but the question is does the 2008 manual really supersede the 2006 one? i.e. is it a specific marine install manual too or just a truck or generic one?

Wow thanks for all the help chaps, I think it will be inclined about 30 deg basically following the contour of the boat skin, exhaust will be will be downward pointing and the glow plug housing virtually directly upwards. Fingers crossed but thanks all. Cheers. Colin.

Doesn't condensation normally form in the exhaust pipe, rather than in the heater?

Indeed Pete, mostly exhaust eating acidic condensate too, though a bit in the heat exchanger but I really can't see that as a reason, The Webasto specific marine manual allows 90 degrees inclination to this date. As I said earlier the main issues we have encountered when so mounted are difficult starts from incomplete combustion after a number of months and premature coking. And here's a spanner in the works, it doesnt happen if you do the same with say a TTC which works on precisely the same basis except that the combustion air inlet is at 90 deg to the exhaust instead of parallel and right next to it like on ATs and Eber Ds.
I stopped trying to anaylise why and just avoid it happening now.
