I decided that our old one needed to come out for inspection as it never ran reliably and found it was date stamped 1987, so I thought not worth spending money on something 20 years old ( try telling my student daughter that!), so the said daughter got me looking on E-bay and lo and behold we have a new one bought for a very reasonable price on E-bay, now to install it! It fits the old brackets but comes with an exhaust silencer: is it suggested to use that in a marine installation or just stick the old lagged exhaust tubing on the outlet of the new heater? Any other tips? The wiring instructions are a little confusing as they cover every eventuality of controller and the colour abbreviations are in german but I think I have them sorted!

Like you I fitted a secondhand Eberspacher and it has been giving sterling service over the past 3 years. It didn't come with a silencer but I bought and fitted one because I had often been kept awake by the high-pitched whistle of heater exhausts on nearby boats and I was resolved not to cause any annoyance myself. I fitted the silencer about 2 feet down the pipe from the heater outlet and lagged both pipe and silencer.

If the original installation was not too noisy then your new one should be the same. However you could probably make yourself more popular in a marina situation if you fitted a silencer. These are quite cheap on EBay and you can fit it anywhere on your existing exhaust.
Good luck!!
