Just finished installing an airtronic d2 heater in our boat, when I fired it up for the first time it smelt and gave off a small amount of smoke I think from the exhaust pipe, inside. Seals are ok. Is this a case of it being new and will it burn off after a few goes?

If I have filled my diesel tank to the brim, the fuel level in the tank if higher than the eber. Sometimes this does cause a small amount of diesel to leak past the fuel pump. and into the heater. Result is copious exhaust smoke when the heater is started (often many weeks later). I suspect that a tiny amount of diesel also drips out of the heater into the exhaust lagging resulting in the fumes you mention. All clears within a few minutes of operation with hatches wide open.

(I'm sure Dave will be along soon to tell us off, but also explain the intricacies)

Indeed, you know you should have a shut off valve to prevent that happening Vic, bad boy. As for initial ponkyness and a bit of smoke on a new install, it's not unusual but neither is it universal, just keep an eye on it, the smoke from the exhaust should disappear within a couple of hours and should not happen after three of four start operations but the "hot" smells from ducting and stuff may take a good few hours running, again keep an eye on it.

After reading the OP again, do you mean the smoke came from near the heater to exhaust pipe joint? if so it may be that you failed to use exhaust assembly compound when installing it.

Thanks David2452,
Couldn't tell exactly where the smoke was coming from.
It didn't mention anything about exhaust compound in the instructions, and never supplied any. am I being dim not putting any on?
The smoke has stopped after the first start up. Still a bit of smell I believe is just the new pipes now.

I would pop a bit of compound on the joint, especially if the recirculated air is being drawn from the same area (which is really a no no but at least should have a properly gas tight exhaust). As I said earlier the new "hot" smell should soon go, but do monitor it
