Eberspacher heating - a silly mistake

I had a similar problem on previous boat where the heater was high up under the coaming but exhaust came down into a locker and sat beside the hull. We had a long cold snap just after I installed it and I ran it after making certain the exhaust wasn't touching the hull. It was fine until I stuck a load of fenders in and a large ball one started to smell. That was over 20 years ago but I rember fixing it the next day.

I had some sort of insulating foam at home with foil on both sides. I don't know what it was but a blow torch didn't make an impression. I stuck bits on the hull behind the exhaust and glassed in some wooden strips either side and below the exhaust. Then I cut some ply, lined it with the same material on the inside face and screwed it in place. The "box" took up little space, was easy to dismantle and was still fine when I sold the boat a few years ago.

I've just checked online and it seems likely that I used small sections of Pyroduct slab or something very similar.

You could try a similar approach if you have some space to fit a cover.
