I have an Eberspacher D4L from 1980s. I have been sorting out some wiring issues and noticed that when the heater is working I can see the flames / glow from the combustion in coming from the side of the glow plug. Is this normal? I have a photo and video of it but cannot see how to upload them.

You should not be able to see flames anywhere! But I recall that some older D4s had a big resistor coil on the outside and this could be seen to glow on start up. It should go out once the heater is fired up. Lots of amps required at start up!

No, you shouldn't be able to see combustion flames!

Well well !! I used to fix D4s D4Ls and the DLC range but have never seen that arrangement. A sort of glow plug and fuel inlet.

It does look like a 'thing of purpose' though and no doubt someone will give us the answer! If you can supply the model details that I cant see on the label I may be able to locate it in my library.

A new one for me too! I've never seen that arrangement before, but the heater is rather old. I just looked at the D4L parts list and the workshop manual, and the fuel inlet is indeed combined with the glow plug. So, contrary to my previous claim, in this case I guess you can be expected to see the flames!

Hi everyone - thank you for the replies and help. As you can imagine seeing the frames was slightly worrying as I had changed the glow plug, and not used the unit since. I mean the flames looked controlled and do not come outside of the glow plug I just have never seen it where you can actually see the combustion taking place. I am attaching a photo of the model label.
