The fine wire mesh cylinder which surrounds the tip of the glow plug can become contaminated with carbon. Replacements do exist, but does anybody know if this mesh is just plain s/s fine wire -or has any "rare earth" or exotic alloy content - to assist combustion?
At the price they are - I'd guess just eber prices for fine s/s mesh. (£16 -ish)

Can I simply hook out, clean with either ultrasonic bath or brass brush?

thanks,
Graeme

they can be cleaned in a solvent, i have found carb cleaner good for breaking up hard deposits.
they only need to be replaced if there are corroded holes or if the carbon cannot be removed.

hello
don't mean to hijack the post but got eber out due to new engine / tank re fit etc is it worth fitting new service kit before re fitting even if it was working okay
been in boat approx 5 years steady weekend holiday use only
which parts to replace / strip down?
i like the look of eber dealer/supplier as detailed above
thanks

The gauze could be worth replacing whilst it's out, depending on how hard it is to get to once installed. Whilst out you can also shake out any carbon that's built up inside it. If really choked with carbon though, the end needs to come off and a proper clean out, replacing the gasket and felt ring (depending on which Eberspacher it is).

As mentioned earlier though - it's not easy getting the gauze out without damaging it - so a replacement is always best to have at hand.

It's definitely easier to work on back at home whilst not tucked away in the corner of a locker.

Also - If you don't replace the gauze... you'll have more work to do when it does start smoking.

You will delay changing it because it's difficult to get to. Then you end up having to replace it anyway - but have the extra work to do which is to clean the black oily deposits from the transom from around the exhaust.
