Eberspacher fuel pump question......Does size matter ?

Many years ago fitted a D2 to my boat,it is working fine.
Have just aquired a D4L. Appears to work Ok on the bench.
Will we need to source a bigger fuel pump. ?
Have no idea exactly which or what sized pump we have at the moment,it was bought via Ebay and just worked from the word go.

I think all Eberspachers use the same pump. The increased fuel supply for larger heaters is obtained by pulsing the pump more frequently.

Even the biggest diesel heaters running flat out are burning less than 1l per hour - it's a trickle which any pump should be able to deliver.

Feel free to set me straight, but is the pump not individually tuned to specific heaters in order to deliver a predetermined fuel quantity per pump pulse? I vaguely recall somewhere that this tuning is best left to the factory.

Airtronic D2s and D4s do use the same pump but I have seen much bigger pumps for some of the larger Ebers. I think the D2 pump will be OK on the D4L. The D4L manual may supply the amount the amount of fuel which should be delivered in one pumping cycle. The manual for the Airtronic certainly does.

Speak to Roger or Chris at South Eastern Autos at Tovil. Just up the road from the footbridge. They are main dealers and seem pretty good with advice. Have just tackled them about my 'freebie' D2 as I want it checked out before install, and also need a flange to take the warm air hose through a watertight bulkhead. It really does depend on the model of Eber, for instance I have been called to a heater producing lower heat than expected and the pump was incorrectly specified. The pump for a D4L is part # 251217470000 and the D2 and D4 is 224518010000 and are different dose per pulse.
Webasto are the same, some models share pumps and others do not.

Well, not really!! The pumps are dosing pumps in that they deliver a fixed amount of fuel per pulse. The frequency of pulsing may be changed by the ECU to suit the heating demand and the fan speed may be changed as well.

Thanks to all who replied.
Did look at the above website very informative.
Think you do need to tray and match the pump as to much/little fuel can cause pump malfunctions.Although this may refer to modern kit,not stuff out of the stone age like my new aquisition.
Will install and see if existing pump will function with the D4.
The unit was thrown out by a despairing owner as non functioning and beyond saving a new modern unit is being installed.

A biger heater will require more fuel otherwise it would not produce more heat than a smaller heater.
The pump will need to be calibratet to the heater.
Once the flame is established and the glow plug shuts off the flame keeps the wick glowing. Larger heater biger wick more fuel bigger flame.
The D3L consumption is listed at 0.38l/ph.
If you check spec for D4L you will find it consumes more.
Ray at Colchester fuel injection Ltd may advice, he has worked on ebers for donkies years and knows his stuff. They also supply spares.

Your D4 will probably run anf fire up with the pump you are using but it may not have the advantage of a larger heater and only produce heat equivelant of the smaller heater the pump originated from.

Had look on Ebay for a 3-5 KW pump,however prices seen to be all over the shop !
Would have thought new and s/hand prices would have some sort of relationship but new units appear to cost up to £160.00 and a basic used unit from £30.00 or less. ?
