Eberspacher failure

Yup I agree, But I'm not entirely certain 4 new batteries WERE required.
Even if you remove the batteries cost ( £316) It's still nearly £900 - Go on , how
much for a new D3?

If the battery's were all connected as a set then yes all 4 should be replaced as a set if they were of similar age or you would find yourself with voltage problems within a short time.

I'm surprised you weren't offered a new unit if the repair came to that much, for what you had done there assuming it was taken to them I would have charged about 1/3rd of that for a similar job on a Webasto and I am not cheap, just a new marine unit with no cabling but including a pump would not have come to much more than £900

Does that include fitting & vat for £900 ? As these kits usually sell for around £1700

My invoice shows VAT to add on to that £1212.05 - total amount £1424.16
2 metres Eber. exhaust was £94.92
1 Eberspacher wick was £ 62.68
Am I being ripped off?

Whether you have been ripped off or not I have no idea as I can't see what you actually got for the £94, nor can anyone apart from you, I would be surprised if you were charged over Eber retail for what ever part you got, but for 2m of 22m stainless exhaust tube with lagging and a couple of clips I would expect to charge about £50 inclusive. If the £94 is + VAT i.e. £115 in round numbers that is what I would charge for a marine leak proof silencer with integral exhaust tubing, the complete thing is 2m long so that may (or may not) be what you got.

Yes.

When you can buy everything to service an eberspacher for around £75 inc all filters, glow plug, gauze and gaskets. (you could do with some caustic soda for cleaning) The job itself can be carried out by someone with very basic diy skills and an hours spare time. The only moving part in the heater is the fan. The only thing involved with servicing is taking it apart, cleaning, new glow plug and putting it back together.

They show you how it's done here http://www.letonkinoisvarnish.co.uk/Eberspacher_Intro_1.html

What you paid for the service seems astronomical

The "wick",which we are discussing here (properly called heat exchanger liner) is about £65 on its own so at the price, the OP was correctly charged, I don't know what you mean by all filters, there is only one in the pump, getting these heaters working again is sometimes simple, setting them up properly is a different matter and that's why people have problem after problem with them. It is simply wrong to say yes without being in possesion of all the facts, we are not

Sorry, maybe a d3 is different to a d4 but my d4 there was nothing to setup. You put it back together how it came apart, there's no fine adjustments? The only moving part is the fan.

If you're have and are capable of using a torx screwdriver then you can service a d4. To change the glow pin either buy a socket made for the job for a few quid or grind a slot in one of your own. I assumed a d3 was similar to a d4.

Bearing in mind this was 18 months ago, I really should have asked for a quote for service, but obviously one cannot give
a quote (not an estimate) without removing & dismantling the unit. I have paid it & that's it.
My question now is, do I persevere & have it looked at again when it may now be the ECU at fault
David2452, you seem to be in a good position to comment & as you are East Coast!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like I said easy to take apart and put back together, but what was the CO2% & CO after service and install, what HG at the intake and outlet hood, what temperature measured at the centre of the duct 8" from the nozzle when you re installed after service?

If you are able to remove it yourself then I would take it to an Eberspacher truck agent, often cheaper than dedicated marine, I hear good reports about Colchester Fuel Injection, they can pop it on a test rig and sort it for you, or at least avise on any fault.

I guess the majority would never know because they take it out and send it off for service a bit like you're advocating

What is there to gain from taking to truck agent?

No, the measurements are taken after re insall as the heater is affected by the install, specific back pressure on duct, exhaust length, fuel delivery and quality etc etc, I go back to what I previously said easy to do if you only do half a job, like most stuff really.
