It seems to me that we sailors in the temperate/tropical climates have a lot to be grateful for.
I cannot believe the number of posts about heaters that don't work or malfunction or need constant attention.
I have been sailing for many years and have never even SEEN an Eberspacher leave off had problems with one. I reckon I would spend my money on thermal clothing rather than put up with such apparently unreliable kit.
I feel sorry for you guys!

They\'re not unreliable...

If they're properly installed and regularly used, Eberspachers are incredibly reliable. The problems start when people buy second-hand units out of road vehicles, make a half-hearted attempt at fitting them in their boats, then wonder why they break down. I've used Eberspachers in several boats for around the last 18 years, with no major problems. One way to prolong the life of an Eberspacher is to fire it up on full heat for at least 30 minutes every month.

agree
just spent the weekend on mine in pwllheli on the hard, suffering from dying cold, fired the eber up on friday eve and shut it off on sunday afternoon, cozy, was even hot enough for swmbo who normally freezes over in less than a heat wave, mind you i did fill a rubber hot water bottle before we went to the club and warmed the berth up, after all it was wedding anniversary!!

Re: They\'re not unreliable...

My own experience and that of a charter boat operator is when an Eberspacher starts playing up, i.e. hard to start without the engine running for example, is to check the in-line main fuse for the system Often found under the floor boards and prone to damp and even bilge water. Well worth a check and often the core of all problems

Hmm - well if you've never seen one, you'd be a bit pressed to have problems with one. However, that aside you'll have your problems with electical gear just the same as the rest of us - perhaps our Eberspacher is your Ice Maker?

I agree totally. I used to have a so called "Rolls Royce" Taylors diesel heater which I had to rub two boy scouts together to get started. Covered the boat in smuts and managed to boil one tiny corner of the boat while leaving the rest like an arctic winter. Now I press a button and my beautiful Ebby wafts Carribean warmth through every space- sheer heaven!!

On a site like this you only hear about the heaters that go wrong and not the many thousands that work without a problem. I've had Eberspachers, all professionally installed, 3 different models in 3 different boats, since 1985 and I've never had a problem with any of them.

They seem much happier on City diesel or the like than heating oil... I'm pondering fitting an extra (small) tank to enable me to feed my Ardic with 'the good stuff' whilst running engines on the cheaper variety, but can't help feeling that five fuel tanks may seem like overkill on a 32ft boat!!!

Ardics seem slightly more fussy...
