I have a 12 month old D4 using the original 75mm ducting which I have been progressively insulating. (With great success!) I've just got the last section to do which is that nearest the heater itself. I've got it in my head frame somewhere, although I can't remember where, that you shouldn't insulate the duct immediately adjacent to the heater. Does anyone know if that is correct?

With the more modern heaters the latest EU regs meant that the overheat temperature cut off is lower and it has been known that insulating close to the hood can trigger it, I always insulate right up to the hood and have only had a couple of issues with Webasto, none with Wallas or Mikuni and removing 4" cured it, it may well be that replacing the overheat sensor would also have cured it but I will never know.
I think Eber recommend not insulating the first bit on their heaters but I may have dreamed that.

Many thanks, yes, I also have the feeling that I may have dreamed it. Anyway, it's easy to get at (for a change) so I'll insulate up to the hood and see what happens. Take it off if it's a problem.

I insulated mine with standard glass wool right up to the unit and it is still going fine 4 years in.

Ergh! Our boat had the Eber nearly covered in that bloody stuff, held in place by a piece of wood. The locker still has remnants of the stuff, and I daftly not realising how nasty it is removed it by with my bare hands. I am still suffering from damaged skin on my fingers months later.

If you insist on using this stuff on your boat, make sure it's well contained and USE GLOVES!
