Hi all

I have an Eberspacher D5W which overheated and has now gone into lockout where it will start for between 5 and 10 seconds then turn off. I have rectified the problem but it still won't start up.
I don't exactly want to send it off as I have a lot of experience in mechanics and electronics and I know I can get it running again myself.
Ideally I would like to get my hands on the kit to reset the ecu. I bought the 7 day diagnostic timer that Butler Technik showed as compatible but it does not work with the 'TEST' pin on the ecu. I have also seen the EDiTH kit but have not yet seen confirmation on compatibility with a D5W.

Black with white tracer shorted to yellow on the standard D5LC will reset lockout when held for about 5 seconds but not sure whether similar. Not sure whether I'd risk it without further probing with a scope.

I don't really get involved in Eberspacher wet systems, only Webasto.

hi, I don't know if this will help you but I had a similar problem with my eberspacher a few years ago. Mine was original equipment from 1992, I'm not sure of the model number but it has a separate ecu. I took it to the local dealer ( local to my home) and was told that the ecu needed replacing at a cost of nearly £500, so not really worth it for such an old unit. After some research it appeared that these early units locked down after 3 failed attempts to start the heater, and needed to be reset by a dealer. Unfortunately, these dealers (mostly for trucks etc.) seemed to know nothing about this. Someone suggested that I put the ecu unit in the freezer for 48 hours. I did and it's been working perfectly ever since. However, there are SAFETY reasons why these units work this way. I needed to completely overhaul the heater, de-coke it and replace a number of parts.

Thanks Matthew, the D5W uses a different ecu to the D5LC, after checking the wiring diagrams the wires you mentioned are to do with fault code querying, the yellow wire on the D5W is the on/off wire for the unit. I did still try it but didn't work

Thanks pawl, you got me on the right track with this with the ecu but not the freezer trick.

The real problem with this looks to be a dry joint I had missed first time around on the board, I still need to fully test it as the unit is on the bench currently connected to an old battery and power supply but the combination can't keep up with the glow plug and the power supply keeps going into protection. Initially it seems fixed as it will now run longer than before. The dry joint looks to be for one of the relays and I would assume without a schematic of the board it's for voltage state detection.

As soon as I have news on it I'll post here.

Thanks

Steve

Hi all

Tested the unit properly today and it seems to be working fine. It decided to shut off once but after turning the enable circuit off then on again it started up as normal and went into pump only mode after a period of time, then after a while it kicked the burner back on again then went back into pump only mode again. As far as I am concerned it seems to be a happy little D5W.

Thanks

Steve
