I have just fitted a d5w eberspacher old but works well but Oh! what a whine from it, any ideas what this can be.I have had a suggestion that it could be scavenging air from a leaky main gasket I would have thought if this was happening it would not run to well.Any one with practical knowledge of these heaters and any ides would be appreciated

Can not help but ours is noisy. I had it serviced by what seemed a very knowledgable guy in Brighton and he seemed to have no concerns about the noise level when it started up. Now I have repiped it (to get rid of airlocks and shorten the run) as well great bit of kit but seems heavy on amps with two blowers.

I too have just installed a D5W.
I too think the noise is very noticable, worse than the old D1L air heater on my last boat.
The culprit is the combustion air blower motor and the only consolation is that when the unit has run up to heat the whine lessens considerably. The water circulation pump is silent.
Having heard other D5Ws it seems to be a type problem, otherwise I would start looking for a replacement motor.

Hydronic

Hi

Interested to hear about the eberspacher noise. I'm looking for a heating system for my boat and have lived on a boat with an old airtronic system. My experience of that old system was that it was noisy, smelly and suffered a number of problems, most commonly fuel mixture problems resulting in clouds of smoke. For 2 years all my clothes stank of diesel. Having said that it did keep me warm over 2 very cold winters.
I was put off but having just visited the London boat show there seem to be few alternatives and the hydronic system wont suffer from gas leaks etc. Has anybody any experience with water heating alternatives? I was told by an eberspacher competitor that the hydronic system used a lot of power, going through a cycle every hour but eberspacher denied it. What is the truth?

They really shouldn't be that noisy unless the fan bearing is screeching, they need a decent silencer, not the truck / car thing, it has no place on a boat as it is not gas tight and too small, a combustion air intake silencer is a cheap place to start too as they really whine without one, a bit like an open throat carb. Much quieter alternatives are available today like the Webo thermo top C that comes with all the right marine kit, I guess I would say that being a Webasto dealer though, so not exactly unbiased. Have a wander around and see what other people have and ask them for a listen and a look at the installation. Coincidentally one of my jobs today was quitening down a big 10kw water heater that the other berth holders had been complaining about, it was bloody loud. I fitted a proper exhaust silencer, a combustion air silencer and you couldn't hear it on the next boat down or in the boat accomodation.
Even the big pressure jet mega kw units can be made to run at acceptable noise levels.

David appreciate your reply ,my own thoughts are that it could be a bearing not sure of fan speed is this fan bearing on the blower motor as the blower motor has been suggested as the cause. If this is a bearing at fault it should be fairly easy to replace ?I believe I have an air intake silencer it is just a short cap over the air tube do not have a silencer on exhaust tube just connected into eberspacher hull fitting.Apart from the whine it works well on clorifier, one small rad and a vw car heater matrix.

Some heaters can be stripped down to bearing level but I wouldn't count on it, if it needs a new fan motor assembly it will be a crazy price, have a look at an exploded parts list for the heater and that should give you a better idea than the downloaded manuals for public consumption as they are not nearly as comprehensive as you might think.

38mm exhaust? in which case Webo part # 9012440A, dealers may tell you there is no such thing so persevere. Or these folks http://www.westerntydens.co.uk/catalogue.pdf will make you one if you can wait a month for a lot less cash (being PBO I know how important that is)
Their part # S125, or S125S in stainless. The intake silencer is a standard part for the heater and is effective. I would post a picture but IPC don't make it easy enough so I won't.
