Eberspacher D3L Problems (Apologies)

Apologies for another Eberspacher problem post...

We have a D3L fitted, no idea on vintage and we've not done anything in the way of servicing it since getting the boat 3 years ago. Until yesterday it has worked fine....

Turn the switch to heat (we have the setup with Vent/Off/Heat switch and separate room thermostat) and nothing happens. No click, no lights on room thermostat, no fan at all. The green light in the centre of the Vent/Off/Heat illuminates but that's it. However, switching to vent mode the fan runs.

Next time I'm down I will check all the connections are ok, but any pointers where to start would be very much appreciated. Does the vent mode working rule out anything?

The vent switch working may tell you something, at least it is an indication that the ECU is OK and is a confirmation that the air motor is fine. My money would be on a sensor, (not possible to tell which without testing though) or a fault in the loom. All that said, from your description its well overdue for a service anyway.
 
Well, the vent mode working indicates that at least the fan and the fan side of the ecu work!! The D3L system is fairly basic but the eco will still check the sensors, the fan, the glow plug, the pump etc. I hope you have the manual so that having done a quick check on general connections you can go through each component testing for the values in the manual. ( To be honest most components just fail rather than drift from their values so generally you will have a fault if you get a short or completely open circuit.)
Fingers crossed its something simple! Does the D3L have a reset button ( under the black rubber thingy??)
 
Yes, D3L does have a reset button so that would be my first place to look. Not sure if that is affected by the way it works on vent but no harm in just pressing it first.
 
Problem solved.

Glow plug continuity seemed fine so continued to trace the connections and wiring and found a yellow cable no longer fitted to the back of the vent/off/heat switch. My various searches highlighted that positive on yellow is what gets the thing going, so it seemed odd it was detached! Put it back on the switch terminal and hurray, back to life. No idea how it worked loose, but pleased that's all it was. Proper eber service to be arranged later in the year.

On a slightly separate note, this is the glow plug type fitted - does this require the slotted socket to remove or do both wires come off when the top nut is removed? I didn't want to tempt fate yesterday but would be useful to know.
