Hi, i am looking to fit an Eberspacher D2L heater to my boat and need some help, hope someone has an answer as the dealers aren’t coming up with much, i have found that the harness length is 4.8 metres which i think will be slightly to short for where i want to situate the heater and controller. We have been told that the Harness cannot be modified as it now uses Can bus which is resistance sensitive. Has anyone fitted one of these heaters and modified the Harness? Also looking at the wiring diagrams it doesn’t show an 801 controller but they are available with them, does the 801 controller use the Can Bus system or is it just the new easystart controllers?

thanks in advance

Graeme

The best person you could have a chat with is this firm. Ebersparcher problem solving is a side line of theirs to their varnish business (which is excellent stuff). They are not Ebersparcher dealers, but just a guy interested in keeping them running. Ebersparcher acknowledge his useful service and keep him fully informed of developements and training. So worth asking them by phone or email.

I'd speak to Stuart at Mellor Online <sales@melloronline.co.uk>, or Matt at Eberspacher and Webasto Vehicle and Marine Heaters | Next Day Shipping
I've just bought an Eber system off Mellor and the service was good, reasonable price and good technical advice on what to buy, down to which color of wire to connect, and it's function. I've used Butler Technik for spares and for advice on how to fix Ebers when they go wrong.
I've used CAN Bus and my boat is fitted with a CAN Bus system. I don't think that the system is that critical on the round trip resistance of the loom. It's a 4 wire system, 2 power and 2 for the serial bus. Extending the power cables, assuming that you are using a big enough wire so you don't get a big voltage drop, shouldn't be a problem. Similarly with the serial data lines, but you need to be aware that the serial data lines need a 120 ohm terminator resistor at each end of the line. In the Eber D2L system, these are already installed, so just cutting an pasting a short section of wire into both the power and the data lines should not be problem, but check with Stuart or Matt to get an expert view.
Both Mellor and Butler Technik have free online technical libraries. I'd down load the manuals and have a look at them, I found them a little impenetrable at first, but they are German, straight to the point and accurate. If you take some time to work through them, they provide most of the information you'll need.
I had a quick look at the D2L manual, and it looks like there are two separate control interfaces built into it, a CAN Bus and a standard "old fashioned" interface, which should run a 701 or an 801 controller.
I hope that helps, but do talk to someone who really knows the systems, before you buy.

Thanks i have been more looking at the harness today and the easystart controller and the 801 controllers work on the LAN system as oppose to the CAN system, Butler technique do state on the website that harnesses can’t be extended without the written instructions from Eberspacher and speaking to other dealers it is the Canbus that is resistance sensitive. I’ll have a chat with Mellor but feel confident on today’s info that the provided i use LAN then extension of all the other cables shouldn’t be an issue.
