Eber Exhaust Silencer

Just fitted a new Eber but didn't fit the exhaust silencer that came with it! Thought I would see if it was gas tight by simply closing the end with my hand and blowing into the other end. It leaked big time! It is brand new and from the construction I can't see how it could be gas tight! The thought of exhaust gases leaking into, in my case, the engine compartment (with gas access into the rest of the boat) is not nice, especially in the light of recent deaths from CO poisioning.

Am I missing something or is this a MAJOR problem for Eber?

If it's the small metal silencer, then it's designed to go on the bottom of a van/truck and isn't gas tight.
Ones designed for boats cost around £100 and are gas tight.
